The Rail Line celebrated a soft opening last night, and maybe twenty people showed up. It's an event center with a huge set of windows overlooking the city, mostly space that hasn't had any purpose at all. It's all parking lots that really don't need to be parking lots. A market, the Salt City Market, will rise up on part of it. The roof allows foot traffic, offering a three hundred and sixty-degree view, including a glimpse down into the flowing waters of Onondaga Creek. Trains really do go by on a pair of tracks that once supported a commuter rail scheme between Jamesville and Destiny Mall a stop at the Carrier Dome. A garden of barren earth awaits the tillage of an organic gardener, about half an acre of land. The space will make for rather special gatherings, perched on the rails, watching a city come back to bloom. I talked with Brian, the bartender, who probably manages the space for the ownership team. We had never heard of the Rail Line until then, but it is a beautiful venue. They have a large outdoor space as well as the indoor space with a large bar area. They didn't have a kitchen but allowed outside caterers to be brought in. The parking area was a big bonus as it is located just down from the Landmark Theatre in the center...

The room is a great size for an event like this (I don't know the capacity but I imagine we could have fit a few more people in). The bar is long and well stocked, the staff was professional and accommodating. Plus they have SO MUCH PARKING!! That's a rarity for a small event space downtown SYR. I will recommend this to others...
