This is the worst Mexican food I have tasted in a long time. We got here about 10 minutes after they opened up for business and the place was starting to fill up nicely, so I think qe would be in for a real treat. My landlord and several others mentioned this place was awesome and being originally from San Antonio, TX, I was hopeful. The only thing that I thought was decent (not great) was their bean and cheese dip for the chips. They took 45 minutes just to bring the iced tea and water. The enchiladas I ordered were not hot and used wolf chili for the enchilada sauce. For the price (which was way too high for the quality) this should have been real authentic sauce. The ground beef crispy taco I also ordered had more boiled potato in it than beef so I knew they were going to cut corners. The chinichanga was not prepared as described and was cold qhen it finally got to me (another 25 minutes after the 45 minute wait for the drinks) and the waiter never came by to refill my drinks. I had to get up 2 x and ask for a refill. After the whole ordeal, I went home and was sick to the stomach for 2 days after I ate and had heartburn that wouldn't go away until well into the morning. I can't believe this passes for authentic Mexican cuisine around here. It kinda made me sad because it should be a better representation of my culture. I love to cook and felt like the $ I spent here could have been spent on food I created with love and attention at home. I was just hopeful to finally find a place close to my new home that I could enjoy. So much for this place. "EL REY" is supposed to be "the King"... should be...
Read more"Authentic" is the worst way to explain this place. As an Authentic Mexican food fanatic, I can say this was the least authentic I have ever had. The Chile Relleno had cheese that was still solid and the Chile wasn't cooked. It was covered in what I could only call a tomato puree with absolutely no seasonings at all. The enchilada was lack-luster in the flavors as well. The Tamale I got was rock hard and covered in the same tomato puree the Chile Relleno was. It also contained little pieces of tin foil which was lovely. When the replacement came out it was a little better, but the inside was so severely dry I had to drown it in the tomato puree stuff. My husband's Chile Colorado wasn't even made with Authentic Ranchero sauce, and they screwed it up twice. The friends cheese quesadillas were made with random tiny bits of lettuce when they were supposed to be plain. And his shrimp was still cold on the inside. I'm VERY upset with this place and will never be returning. However, the waiter we had was a green and he did quite well for a new hire. As well as the gentleman who kept coming over to check on us, and proceeded to make fresh Guacamole for the diners next to us. Overall, will not be returning and was a horrible experience. If you want microwaved food that is more authentic than this try store bought. More worth your money. Cuz this was definitely...
Read moreEl Rey's has consistently great food. We are always seated quickly and served just as fast. They have updated the decorations and seating. The knew benches are tall and has blush pillowed cushions. I really enjoy the noise reducing effect they have while sitting in the benches. It's more comfortable now. The salsa has to be my favorite in town. The staff is quick to refill a drink or to bring out more chips and salsa. The restaurant is clean and has an inviting smell. The space is always at a comfortable temperature. The bar is small but there are plenty of TVs around the restaurant. I recommend the WV Burrito, the Feria Plato, or the Don Juan Steak. The out is always a good option on a busy lunch. The portions are the same as at the sit down restaurant. They have a new beer called Sol. It reminds me of a Jose Cuervo but a little crisper. Its a great beer that goes down easy.
I highly recommend the atmosphere, the food, and especially the service. Quick and well prepared should be their motto. This consistence causes my family to go back again and again, and...
