What an unfortunate and strange path Noble Fish has gone. Their unmitigated success as a small restaurant in terms of food quality and preparation has devolved into what can only be described a sad shadow of its former self. I had thought that Noble Fish was a family-owned business, but it turns out that it's a wholly owned subsidiary of the Unification Church, and it all is becoming clearer.
Noble Fish started out as an Asian grocery store with a small dining room in the rear. I believe there may have been five tables. The sushi they offered was exquisite. To my recollection, the absolute best sushi I have had in the Metro Detroit area. When I made trips to Hawaii, Guam, and Japan, I found myself comparing what I was served at various sushi restaurants to what I had eaten at Noble Fish, and found that Noble Fish was superior. I couldn't believe how lucky I was to live so close to the best Sushi I could get, and even better, the prices were incredibly competitive.
I had noticed that the sushi quality had fallen off after the 2020 expansion, but was convinced that I COVID had caused some of their better chefs to retire or relocate, and it would only be a matter of time before they got their legs under them, but no such luck. The quality has taken a nose dive.
I just ate there today, and will not be going back. I would better spend my money at sushi from Kroger than what I had eaten today. The Crazy Eel was not freshly prepared. It was chewy, and had no flavor. The Michigan Roll I had also had a similar lack of flavor, with the rice seeming to detract in both texture, which was mealy and dry, and flavor, which was notably flat. The Acapulco Roll I had was, in the same vein, just as bland. I thought I would recognize some of the individuals behind the counter, but none of the familiar faces were to be seen.
I can't tell which has suffered more: the quality of the fish, the preparation of the rice, or the quality of the fish storage. Regardless, the entire operation seems to be phoned in at this point. This place is going to continue making money in spite of itself, but I am left to lament the loss of a truly...
Read moreI always get grab and go spicy shrimp roll and once and awhile I also get special crab roll. A few weeks ago I got the spicy shrimp roll and only ate 4 out of 8. I thought it was spoiled at first. It was so weird as it had literally no flavor whatsoever and it’s supposed to be spicy. I didn’t get a receipt and was so famished that I still ate half, otherwise I would have called and gotten a refund. It was blandest roll I have ever eaten. It was the weirdest experience and extremely disappointing.
Today I went back and got the spicy shrimp and special crab as I was so famished while running errands to and wanted something quick. I was hesitant not knowing if it would be good. I just finished eating the crab roll which tasted old. And once again the spicy shrimp is no longer spicy?! It’s the weirdest thing. And not mention, the rice was easily falling apart on my shrimp roll which honestly has never happens to me before with this roll and the rice seemed to be a different texture and taste. I’m so done. For many years I’ve been a raving customer telling everyone you all were the best. But like many others spoken here, (and I did happen to bring up my experience with the woman who rung me up today but she didn’t seem to understand me and/or show much care or concern so I let it go) I don’t think I will be returning either. The service and the quality has really declined and it’s just not worth my time or my money anymore. There is another market in Novi I was told that they are relatives of Noble Fish and when I happen to be in that area, I frequent that spot and also do grab and go Spicy shrimp. Their quality has stayed consistent even though some pricing as well has gone up. It’s fresh and consistent. Maybe your just getting to be too big for what...
Read moreI'm sharing this review on behalf of my friend, who has gone through a lot of stress following a situation a month ago when she ordered takeout here (Salmon Special Roll). This used to be our favorite sushi spot near metro Detroit.
Upon finishing her plate of sushi, she was horrified to see what appeared to be worms (anisakis species) on the plate. Pictures and videos are attached below. They have tapered edges that does not look like the kani that Noble Fish claims. Additionally, they did move more at first, and moved more sluggishly as time went on (when the video was taken). FOOD SHOULD NOT BE MOVING AT ALL!!
What is shocking is how Noble Fish chose to deal with this situation. They were initially very apologetic and promised to collect samples of the potential worms to send them into a laboratory for analysis. However, as time passed, they grew increasingly more dismissive and proceeded to try harder to sweep everything under the rug. They did not go through with the laboratory analysis and instead simply sent "certification forms" from their supplier rather than test the samples. They only gave proof of the source of their fish rather than the results from the samples they collected from my friend. The corporate de-escalation is very inconsiderate. The "forms/letters" are even dated from BEFORE the incident which means no response to what happened was given.
This is an insane lack of accountability and also a terrible food quality/safety issue. Had they properly followed through with investigations, perhaps the whole situation would have felt more assuring. Please keep in mind the negative reviews about food quality when eating here, and...
