Local here. This place is worth a visit. But my perspective is heavily shaded by nostalgia, so be warned.
Been a customer of sweets for 20+ years. To my knowledge, it’s a locally owned business. Great atmosphere and ample seating are its biggest selling points. Great place for a study group to meet. They sell coffee, lattes, donuts, desserts, crepes and sandwiches.
Every-time I stop in, I play a little mental Easter egg hunting game to see what has changed, if anything; be it some of the fantastic artwork for sell, or the differing furniture, or the dessert selection. However, this place is mostly a time-capsule of its original creation. That’s not a bad thing, necessarily, but it has its problems.
The drip coffee has always suffered here. They seem to only make a batch when they are out; I’m certain I’ve had coffee that has sat for many hours, becoming bitter and stale when finally sold to me. I can’t say I’ve ever been wowed by the coffee or lattes here, which makes me sad.
The desserts live in the extremes; they can be just fantastic and yummy or just disappointing and yucky. I take that gamble every time because when it’s good, it’s very good.
The sandwiches and crepes are just okay. At one time, I swear, they were priced to match the quality and quantity you received, but I don’t think that’s the case anymore. Outside the cause of Inflation, I don’t think they have done a good job keeping their food offerings updated or keeping the values relevant or desirable.
This place changes very slow. It’s a local landmark in the BCS. So many students will spend hours upon hours here, getting caffeinated as they study or cram for a test. It’s a great place to meet friends and catch up.
I have so many good memories here that I will continue to support this place and drink the “more likely than not” stale coffee and gamble on a slice of cake being absurdly delicious....

This worth $10+ to you? You're better off going to Chic-Fil-A, Los Cucos, HEB, or any surrounding place to get food for more bang for your buck My reason for One-Starring is because they gave me my food and told me that they were out of sprouts - I told them that's okay, simply bring me some substitute that's equal to the price of these expensive sprouts, and we're fine, to be reasonable - She kept dancing around that and told me she doesn't think they're allowed to do that and then walked away with a, "sorry." So, I paid FULL PRICE for a meal that did not come with all the ingredients advertised and asked for, and this is what I get? Appalling. Missing sprouts and missing avocado. I asked for these specifically, and the cashier confirmed. Do you see them? I don't.
This is the 2nd time this has happened to me & my friends. Only reason I came back to try the food was because I thought this was an employee-specific issue in the past with this gentleman that is no longer there who ripped me off like this the 1st time. But, no, seeing as how the people working there are brand new, this is an establishment-specific issue.
I see now coffee is all they're good for, for the time being. Until the Managers crack down on the employees being rude and lack of hospitality there, then the food will always be below the surrounding competitors. Chicken breast slices, not even a whole breast, some tomatoes, and some sauce............ $10 bucks? Out of your mind.
Edit: Service is far better, all...
Read moreI love Sweet Eugene's. Compared to other coffee shops I get best bang for my buck here. Coffee is high quality and taste great. Staff is awesome too.
I have a couple little suggestions though.
The black coffee cup lids very easily pop off. I know from experience when I get coffee to to go. If you grab the cup the wrong way or grab it from the top the lids pos right off and in my case has spilled all over my car many times.. I recommend finding a better fitting lid or higher quality cup.
I occasionally get a quiche to go or a donut. About 50% of the time I can't stand to eat it because it taste exactly like the cleaner or air freshener the store uses inside. It seems the smell leaches into the glass cabinet they store the food in. I'm not sure how that happens, but in my mind maybe it happens when they mop the floor around the glass cabinet. Maybe the fumes enter through an open door or a vent in the cabinet. It's like the food marinates in this cleaner or air freshener. I'm sure an employee knows what creates this smell you taste. I can't eat it when the taste is too strong, so I just through it in the trash. It just taste terrible when this happens. It's unfortunate because I really like the quiche and the donuts. I strongly suggest getting this figure out. I'm sure I'm not the only person who notices it. Might sell more food this way. Basically it taste like how the inside of the store smells. It's not a bad smell. It just taste really bad. A chemical taste. Like if you put fabulouso mop water in your food. Fabulouso flavoring. I can handle a little hint of it, just not when...
