Met a small group for lunch here. It was only my second visit and that had been many years ago. I was a huge fan of Schnitzels Tavern when we lived in Bellefonte and was looking forward to some good eats again.
Upon arrival, the place was packed which was surprising given it was a weekday. My friend and I were immediately shown to our reserved table where others from our group were seated. Jeremy K., our waiter, quickly arrived and took our drink orders. Looking over the menu, I was torn because there were so many yummy items listed. Even the daily special of skewered shrimp sounded tempting.
I decided to go a bit light and ordered The Dipper sandwich. Most of the group seated were going for the big hitters, the schnitzel, but since I'm not a big luncher, I decided it might be too heavy for me.
Food arrived promptly considering our table size of eight and the number of other patrons packing the house. My shaved prime rib with melted mozzarella on a soft roll was outstanding. The au jus for dipping was tasty and just the right touch. The only criticism I had, and it's just my personal taste, would be having a nice smear of horseradish or a spicy creamy mayo to go on the sandwich. But it really didn't matter and I enjoyed every bite. My side option was a nice potato salad. House made per Jeremy K. and it was a good choice.
Others at our table enjoyed their schnitzel meals. After seeing the size of their plates, I'm glad I stuck to my sandwich. A few got the shrimp special and it looked phenomenal. No complaints heard either.
Some at the table ordered dessert - an Irish type cheesecake. Others got it to go. From what I saw (and heard), it was divine.
My to go order was the Brat Plate that I was taking back to hubby for his supper. Two sausages, sour kraut, and a large potato pancake. Let me just say it was very much enjoyed by my PIC.
Bathroom very clean and well stocked. And service excellent. Jeremy K. was very friendly and attentive. We...
Read moreWe stopped to eat on a Friday afternoon while on a road trip. When we arrived it was not that busy. Our server stopped by our table almost immediately to get our drink order. I honestly don't know ifbshe told us her name. We ordered our food and waited and waited. Our food finally arrived and at first glance looked ok. However, upon tasting it, it honestly could have been better. Our son's chicken tenders looked like they were coated in plain cornmeal and tasted like they were fried in old oil. My husband's burger looked mediocre and was over cooked. Barely any cheese or grilled onions. His coleslaw was served in a plastic 4oz cup that was maybe 2/3 full and looked as if it had been sitting in the fridge, uncovered for a few days because it was dry. My rueben was Barely toasted, the inside of the bread was soggy and the meat was all pilled in one spot. It honestly seemed like the put the sandwich on the griddle for 1 minute and then popped it in the microwave to heat and melt the cheese. My side of potato salad was a huge mound but actually tasted different. So for whatever reason I got a huge side portion and my husband's side looked like an after thought. Our other son's cheeseburger was the only item that actually looked really good. There was no cheeseburger on the kids menu so we ordered a fill price burger for our 10 yr old who only ate the burger part. Service was ok. I don't know if we'd ever stop here again given that the food did not live up to what we were expecting and was pretty mediocre...
Read moreWhen we arrived there was no wait and we were seated quickly. After sitting down and removing my coat, noticed the place was quite chilly. While looking at the menu, we noticed something moving around a window near us. Then noticed a few times something moving around above us. Finally figured out that it was a small bird inside the restaurant.
Waitress was attentive and very nice.
I order the Jagerschnitzel with spaetzle, and red cabbage. The Jagerschnitzel was very dry and when checked the bottom of it, found it was black in spots and quite brown in others. The sauce for the meat was quite bland. The spaetzle was extremely salty and tough to eat, tasted like it was fried way to long. The portion of red cabbage was enough for several people and tasted so-so. Overall, I was quite disappointed. Ate Jagerschnitzel many times while in Germany and other places. This was by far the worst I've had.
My wife order the currywurst with coleslaw. The portion of coleslaw was quite small. The wurst was of decent size. What she had seemed to be a better choice than what I ordered.
I have no plans of returning and suggest, if you're considering going here, try some other...
