My partner recently discovered this hidden gem of a restaurant in downtown Covington and we have now been twice for dinner. The food has been delicious both times and the portion sizes are huge. The staff have also been friendly and efficient despite the restaurant being very busy.
The restaurant itself is fairly small and seems a bit dated, the decor is very simple and the furniture is basic. There are no windows so it's only artificially lit once you get beyond the doors. There are a few booths along a back wall and everywhere else is 2 or 4 top tables. There are bathrooms for patrons and they do a good job of constantly cleaning and clearing tables as people leave, so the tables can be seated quickly. I've never had to wait to be seated. However, this is a place that you don't go to for the view, but for the food!
They have Italian food, fried seafood, and decadent deserts. There are daily specials and seasonal desserts. There is a small alcohol menu as well. My partner ordered the stuffed bell pepper with green beans and mac&cheese both times we went because he wanted to try the beef and the seafood versions. He liked the beef better, but I liked the seafood better, they were both delicious. The green beans are Very Tasty, there is some sort of meat in them that gives them delicious flavor, while the Mac and Cheese is baked, but still creamy, and has a ton of butter. I ordered the fried fish poboy with an order of hush puppies the first time and they were both delicious, exactly what you want from that dish. The 2nd visit I orders the Fried Fish over grits in a crawfish cream sauce and while it was good, it didn't have the expected kick this dish typically has when I've had it at other restaurants in the area. I think between the grits having cheese and there being just too much cream or butter, it drowned out any pepper or cayenne that may have been in the original spice mix for the sauce. It was served with garlic bread that was very good. For dessert my partner got the Blueberry bread pudding and declared it the best bread pudding he's ever had in his 40+ years of life. I've tried both the Chocolate Indulgence cake and the Caramel Brownie Cheesecake and they were both absolutely decadent.
All the dishes were tasty and had very large portions, the fried food doesn't taste greasy, and the drinks aren't weak, but this isn't a place you go and leave feeling healthy. Expect old New Orleans style food and ambiance, the food is good, but you're ingesting a...
Read moreThis was our first visit for me & my wife and the second visit for our daughter's family, who recommended DiCristina for this particular gathering of our family. The Waitress, Brandy, was very caring and took special concern to explain menu items, etc. since this was our first visit. She made caring pro & con factors regarding what we were considering ordering for our gathering of ten people. The stress was on that the portions woukd be large, as well as delicious. The onion rings we're very different and truly delicious. I normally do not eat or never order onion rings. Here, as stated they were delicious and I eat more than ever before. The gumbo was OK. Just not the best I have ever had, nor what I would classify as deliciousness, just OK and the cup portion was just that, a regular customer size cup, not a large quantity , just regular cup. The bowl portion wwas much larger in size and could be consider a large portion. One of our members did order a bowl of gumbo. The spaghetti and meatballs was a large portion, two very nice size meatballs, perphaps large meatballs for some. Very nice size meatballs and delicious. The spaghetti sauce for this Itallian 70 year old was very good, but not exordinary. The one item not truly was not well received, was not enjoyed was a hamburger by one of us that truly enjoys dinning, but was in the mood for a hamburger today. She did not enjoyed it and had a portion of a poboy that someone else ordered that was very good, but the other guest was full per the size of the poboy. Everything else was very good. The atmosphere was very nice. As stated, the waitress and her helpers were very attentive. We will be back to try other items on the menu and will ask for Brandy to be our waitress. Recommend the restaurant to others too and numerous people recomnended the...
Read moreWe have been here many times before and it has always been an awesome place to go for supper. It is a lil pricey but it has always been very worth it. Well we went there Saturday, June 22, and it was anything but. My husban loves the fried chicken there, of course it is his favorite food, and in his belief theirs is the best. Well after ordering the waitress comes to inform him they were out of breasts and wings. ( he doesnt like legs) she offered the menu but he didnt want it. He really had his mouth set on the chicken we went to get. So he told her he would take 2 thighs. Our onion rings appetizer came which is normally so delicious they were really greasy. Ok the waitress brought bread out, and we ssked after for a little more bread, we seen other waitresses bringing out bread to other tables but ours none. The busboy refilled our drinks twice. We even asked him for bread, but got none. I had even made a comment to him that he was more on his game than our waitress. After asking 4 times for bread she finally brought some. When our dinner came my husband thought the chicken was ok, not nearly what it was normally. I had the hamburger steak with grilled onions and brown gravy with mashed potatoes. This whole plate was no taste. I added salt and pepper like 4 times just trying to give it some kind of taste. I didnt finish my dinner cause it still had no taste and was still bland. Hospital food had more taste than that, and salt and pepper couldnt even help it. My sons shrimp poboy bread was burnt. All i can say out of the whole meal we all really enjoyed good ole Bargs red creme soda, it was the best of the whole meal. I dont think we will be returning, such a...
