La Chata Cocina Mexicana — Restaurant in Covington

Excellent food. I was a big fan of the Mexican restaurant that was in this location previously. But it had been a while since we'd been there. One of those things where a place you really like slips your mind. Well I drove through the Home Depot parking lot and noticed kids eat free on Tuesday now, where the old place was Sunday kids eat free. Well we decided to give them a shot on a Tuesday evening. I always get Chicken Burritos from every Mexican restaurant, it's my benchmark item I give them all a shot at. La Chata did an excellent job with their chicken burrito. I had cut it in half and expected I would bring the 2nd half home for lunch tomorrow. Well that plan went out the window and I ate the whole thing. The shredded chicken had a good flavor, the Spanish rice was excellent, their chips were fresh and their salsa was a little on the spicy side which I liked a lot. Overall the experience was great. Found my new favorite Mexican restaurant...

I don't like writing a bad review, but the food tasted bad and didn't sit well. The pre-dinner chips were ok and salsa served with it was good, but after that amazingly every single item was bad. Chili relleno and enchilada both had a bad taste that made me wonder if they were contaminated (with what I couldn't place), the rice was hard and the refried beans dry. The fountain soda was flat (the waiter told me the CO2 wasn't working but only after he had taken my wife's order for a Coke). I asked for a glass of water which had a bad taste and odor. My wife had a shrimp salad and we both agreed that the shrimp was good but she said the lettuce was bitter. There were other people in the restaurant which is something I do not understand. Apparently either first-time customers or people with palates which are as undiscerning as those of the kitchen staff and management. I hope that management can get a handle on...

Update: still a family favorite! We love this place! They have indoor seating and outdoor seating 😀

Very impressed with this little restaurant! We went last night with our family (2 kids, 7 & 3) & we're very pleased!! The serving sizes were perfect, the waitress was nice & friendly. Very authentic Mexican restaurant which was great.

Prices are on the higher side ($12-20/plate) but the quality is 100% worth it!! We were amazed at the flavor! I got the fajita quesadilla & my husband got the beef & shrimp fajitas. Delicious, filling, and not overly greasy.

We will DEFINITELY be recommending this place...
