Went here on a date night with my partner. The server was very friendly, making plenty of jokes and interacting with us. The drinks are wonderful- we recommend the iced tea. The food was great- until we both got food poisoning. I'm sure it was just a bad batch, we actually still plan to make a second visit. That's really saying something, as most people wouldn't go back to a restaurant that made them sick on their only visit. Truthfully, the drinks and atmosphere are the biggest reason to go. The only reason my review is lower is the fact that when we went to leave, my partner wanted to give the tip in tax to the server directly (a common practice of ours, because we've seen far too many tip-swiped) and one of the staffers chased him down while he was looking for the server, saying we forgot to tip. Now, we were already planning to tip, but this is a horrible practice. Chasing your customers and scolding them in the middle of the restaurant that they didn't tip is a big no-no. Tipping is important- we understand that, but don't tell for a customer to tip. It's very rude.
Still a great little...
Read moreWent there on a warm summer eve and were seated in a booth next to the aquariums The air conditioning was running and the condensation on the ductwork was dripping on us. In fact the seat was wet. Much to the waitresses dislike (she seemed quite put off) we asked to be moved and had to cross wet napkins which they had placed on the floor to absorb the dripping water. No apology on their part. So a uneasy feeling began to develop.
I ordered a spring roll, spicy garlic pork with rice and a mai tai. The roll was virtually tasteless and believe me it wasn't due to Covid. The "spicy" garlic should have been called spiceless garlic. The only thing good about it was the uncooked green peppers. The mai tai was a mixological nightmare.
Chen's used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in the North Hills when it was called "House of Chen". It's a mere shadow of its former self. Not recommended, and not enjoyable on any level. Despite the unpleasantness we left a 20% tip for the waitress as a final farewell. No doubt it was our last...
Read moreVery good food. Staff was responsive and helpful. I feel like the prices are a little high for a typical Chinese food place. Beyond that, if you've had Chinese food before, there's nothing special to be found here, EXCEPT: The kids loved the koi pond. Easily worth the higher price just to keep the children busy while we waited. A staff member who I assume was the owner was very friendly and answered all our questions about the fish.
For those interested, here's the answers we got: Q: Do you restock the pond? A: No. They (the koi) breed and restock on their own. No additional help needed. Any small fish you see here were born and raised. Q: What happens during winter? A: The pond freezes over with about 1-2" of ice on the top. The koi will stop eating during winter and gather at the deepest part of the pond. Q: How deep is the pond? A: About 5' near the waterfall. Q: What about predators? A: Herons are the ones they worry about most. If the water didn't freeze over in winter, Herons would take fish while...
