We ordered the veggie Low mien, pork soup dumplings, stir fried string beans, orange chicken, fried beef bou, (thought we order beef fried rice but delivered was different), the scallion flat bread. Delivery was timely and we ordered through the reaturaunt directly. We asked for a side of orange sauce that we didn’t receive but is clearly on the ticket. Each time we try Chinese food around Houston we are always disappointed. This was no different.
The worst item was the pork soup dumpling. You bite into it expecting an explosion of deep yummy pork flavor and you get this watery substance and time piece of pork that tastes like just boiled pork with no seasoning. Not good. The fried beef bou was similar just bigger and with a squishy steamed like meatball in the middle. For me it’s just the watery taste to these and the lack of flavor and even just a bad taste. They don’t taste fresh made. The string beans had a really off flavor to them and bad after taste. A simple garlic sauce with the string beans would have been great. The low mien is made with this delicate noodles like pa Thai and the noodles are soaked in some brown soy sauce or something. More onions than veggies really aside from a couple little broccoli pieces. Again not a flavor we liked and never had low mien like that before.
The Orange chicken was really spicy so my kids couldn’t eat it. Never had spicy orange chicken before although it was cooked well. Honestly I had high hopes but we would not recommend or return. I’ve had authentic dumplings living in Seattle where all Asian foods are represented very well and authentically, especially dumplings. We hoped Houston would offer the same. And maybe it does down town but not in the suburbs. The scallion flat bread was good, a bit oily but probably the best part to off set the spice of the orange chicken. This is just our experience and taste so try for yourself if you like. The total with tip, delivery fee and tax was 90$ way too expensive. More than the best sushi...
Read moreDO NOT EAT HERE!! There was a ROACH in my dumplings! Enough said but I'm going to give ya'll details of my experience with Duck n Bao. I have been so disgusted, I have not been able to write this review. This happened Friday, February 1, 2021. I ordered Pork Soup Dumpings and Shrimp Fried Rice for lunch through door dash, as I am working from home. As I was eating my last dumpling, I opened it slightly and as I was putting it to mouth I saw a bug and dropped it back into the bowl, and screamed. Low and behold, there was a roach in the dumpling. Did I mention, this was the last dumpling?(meaning I ate the other 5 already🤮) So I'm sick to my stomach, hyperventilating, can you imagine? After calming down I call the Health Dept and file a complaint and get a case #. After I got off work I called Duck n Bao for a refund and to inform them that there was a roach in my food. The lady I spoke with calmy says, "you have to call door dash for the refund." So I'm thinking she didn't quite understand what my issue was so I repeated.. There was a ROACH in the dumplings! She says ok but you still have contact door dash. I ask if she was the manager, she said yes, I asked to speak to the owner she said she was the owner. There was no shock, apology, or anything. Wow! Ironically, her name is Grace. Fastforward a few days and I get a call from the health department. They visited the restaurant and said they have a severe roach problem!! However, because the investigator didn't find any roaches in any food (at that time), they couldn't shut them down, but gave them a citation and they will return to see if they rectified the problem. Y'all be careful where you eat and feed your families. Some of these restaurants just want to stay in business during these trying times with little to no regard of the quality of their food and health of their patrons! Sooo disgusting I wish I could give them 0...
Read moreI ate here twice as I wanted to try more before I review. This place has very good food. The five stars is for the food.
I was there with a friend and had the duck and it was outstanding. I came again with my wife and again it was very good. Possibly one of the better places outside the Bellaire area in Houston. In all I tried the half duck, chicken soup dumpling, shrimp and pork shui mai, double pepper chicken, and fried chicken egg rolls...all very good. Not sure why but no soy at table and when I asked for some I got a few packets. Maybe they think one should not use it?
Service was good. Not outstanding but I don't need waiter to chat me up...the food came, it was done well and we got what we wanted without issue. All good.
A few problems the second time around. Table was unbalanced and was a bother, wife's drink was not right but they replaced. There was a lot of food and we decided not to bring the rest with us because we were not going home but it seemed like the man thought there was a problem with food or we were wasteful. Best not worry why, we couldn't finish it and weren't going home, that is all
You can get this quality food and service, or better, on Bellaire for probably less money but then you must drive far. I do think that the food was a bit more than it should be but it is worth it to get real good food closer to home.
Maybe put soy out on tables and make sure not to sit people at wobbly table or just make sure you don't have wobbly tables. We spend money and are loyal to restaurants that we like and I like this one. Sadly price will limit our visits. The few things that were wrong are easily fixed to ensure good dining experience. I recommend this place and hope...
