Okay ... to you displaced Kama'ainas This place is like the mom and pop plate lunch places that circle from Moiiliili to Kaimuki around through Waimanalo along the old Waialae Ave. The teriyaki chicken and beef flavor and style is definitely like da kine I used to grill with my friends at Kuhio beach at the end of a day, when I sported T shirt, jams and zoris. The portion is plenty ... way more than a Zippac or the UH lunch wagons. The rice is classic plain Hinode type. For those malahinis that note the "plain"ness of the rice, the plain rice gets its flavor from the meat and is usually preferred over fried rice to allow the subtle background flavor of ginger and garlic to manifest. It sucks up da Teriyaki juice and allows like no waste. The Kalbi ribs are really ono too. They sport a huge stash of Hawaiian Sun and Aloha canned drinks behind the counter. That's like having Fort Knox in your back yard or like teleporting paradise to Dallas... like quantum entanglement, man.
The Katzu chicken was awesome, ... tender and cooked perfect. Yes you don't salt the chicken like french fries. That's what the sauce is for. The sauce is FREE ... in big COVID proof dispensers on the side. You poor Ubereats folk gotta figure out how to get the lolo courier to walk over and fill a container with sauce.
Oh.. and for the manong out there, I tried the banana Lumpia last go round. That was ono too but definitely could use a scoop of vanilla icecream when inhouse dining returns.
My keikis are hapahaole and they both give da kaukau * (5 stars - yeah count em') My haole wife now says "Eh ... maybe pick up some da kine on the way home?"
Aloha to...
Read moreI'm from out of town and it was our last afternoon here. The rest of my family wanted burgers....again. I wanted something different! Searched restaurants near by and this one caught my eye. The plates people were posting and the reviews made me take a double take. I finally gave in and ordered online. I ordered the combo pick three. I had chicken katsu, beef and rib. I could've substituted the macaroni salad for more rice (since a lot of reviews said it was bland) but I wanted to try for myself. I also picked up the aloha sauce, katsu sauce and spicy sweet and sour that others suggested. Went back to the hotel and dug in! Everything was soooo good!! They give you such a generous plate. I tried to eat it all but couldn't. (Ate the rest for breakfast). The aloha sauce was so good and that spicy sweet and sour, game changer!! Never had SPICY sweet and sour. So good and more people should have it! The macaroni salad was decent but after eating all the flavorful stuff, it does kind of make it taste bland. Oh, buy when you get to the bottom of the meat! That Cabbage is so good!! I should've gotten more! Sad I don't live here, cause I would definitely be eating...
Read moreAs I was doing some old school driving down the road and using my eyes to find some thing to eat, I found Aloha and am kicking myself for never searching DFW for our own Hawaiian food! Goodbye to road trips for Hawaiian food because this little gem of a restaurant aims to please the senses. It is a quaint and casual atmosphere with depictions of oceanside view painted on the walls and wooden interior to provide for an imaginary trip to the islands. I ordered Hawaiian chicken bbq plates that consisted of grilled chicken with a pineapple/teriyaki sauce on a bed of well cooked cabbage with two sides of white rice and a side of macaroni. Well prepared, simple and delicious best describes my meal. The staff was very friendly and accommodating while negotiating my parents dietary needs. I am looking forward to more and frequent visits which will hopefully include lumpia, spamburger, bbq ribs and fried shrimp.
