High hopes flew South at Birdie’s Eastside. We’d been eyeing this place in our neighborhood for a while, noting a consistently full parking lot and busy patio, and we finally decided to give it a try. The atmosphere is inviting. Hostesses were friendly and quickly seated us at one of the the coveted outdoor tables on a pleasant evening. It was moderately busy with most tables full outside but only a couple occupied inside. It took a several minutes but a waiter did arrive with waters, and we decided to place food and drink orders at once since we didn’t know how long the wait on food might be. Kitchen runners delivered order fairly quickly. All items correct. Unfortunately, that’s where the good ended. Our child got a pasta dish which he mostly enjoyed but we all noted it was absolutely swimming in sauce. The salmon grains bowl was probably the worst item we tried. While the base of farro, quinoa, and Brussels sprouts and corn was fine, the star of the show, the salmon had no seasoning…as in zero. It was dry and overcooked to the point of albumin seeping out. Tragic fish. My husband had the grilled chicken sandwich, and again they protein was woefully overcooked to the point of needing more condiment, any condiment, just to choke it down. Accompanying fries were tasty. About 75% of the way through our food, the waiter comes by for that first bite check. At that point we ask for the check knowing we won’t see him soon if we don’t. When it arrives, it has the two iced teas that we ordered but never received and gave up on. When we pointed it out, he mumbles an oh sorry. And presents the adjusted bill minus the tea. No offer to get us tea. No offer of a to go tea. No offer to fill our now bone dry water glasses. Suffice it to say, he laid an egg. It’s a nice atmosphere, and we’d hoped for better, but if this is the standard for food and service, it may as well have just stayed Luby’s. In fact, it’s not a stretch to say we have eaten better food at a Luby’s than what we had tonight. Squawk! Sorry, Birdie’s. Love my neighborhood and love the concept, but we’ll fly on by next time we find ourselves hungry on...
Read moreIt isn’t often I give bad reviews. I had looked forward to dining here. Had lunch Tuesday and my meal was inedible. Literally couldn’t eat it. Place about 15% - 20% full so busy wasn’t the problem. My patty melt was so greasy that my fingers left huge finger grease stains on the napkins. Tried picking it up and grease just dripped off onto my plate. So I tried cutting it with a knife and fork but there was so much grease that was the only flavor. Fries were stone cold. My dining companion ordered the brisket tacos. Goodies inside okay but there again the tortillas dripping grease. I love fried food, do not have a problem with grease but our meal took grease to an entirely different level. I assumed my server would notice I ate 2 small bites and ask. Not a word was said. I should have said something but by then I was so disappointed I didn’t want to take my time to explain what he should have noticed. They’ve taken the old Lubys and have done a stellar job on a redo, but I feel their focus is on the TVs and the bar, not their food. If that is their clientele aim, great. But if they want business during the day when people aren’t necessarily drinking they need to keep a closer eye in what they are serving from the kitchen as well as servers who are so busy talking about everything and anything that they don’t notice your food was awful. A $60 lunch...
Read moreI'll be honest the food was really good and the ambiance was great especially for brunch but the service? The service was just sad. Though the restaurant was told of the number of people who would be joining us they did not accommodate for the number of people. We needed to have a table added to ours as there wasn't enough seats and when my friend ask if we could have a table added they said "sure" and then proceeded to just stand there as if root to the spot. In the end we just moved the table ourselves. When I placed my order I had asked to have my sourdough bread toasted with butter but when it came out it was just 2 thin, dry slices that were barely even toasted. I let it go and just asked for some butter, 3 times to 2 different people!! They said "ok, sure, definitely " and just walked away. Though the place was a little busy, a bunch of the servicers were just standing together talking to each other, so it I fail to understand why I never got any butter. A friend asked for decaf and she never got that either. After waiting for a long time at some point she just cancelled the order. I understand it's getting hotter and today was especially hot but I think of a little unprofessional to pull up your shirt in front of your customers and wipe you face with it. I do not recommend this place nor do I think I'd...
