Village Baking Co. is conveniently located about 6 minutes (by foot) from where I work during the weekdays. During the summer I discovered this bakery shop, and got into the habit of walking there a couple days out of the week before heading to work. I enjoyed the walk, and found that Village Baking Co. was a clean, nice kept shop. The pastries and coffee were delicious, and the displays looked beautiful! Every time I had gone, the employees who worked there were all very helpful and courteous. Village Baking Co. became a morning habit I looked forward to.
However, I haven't been back in about a month, due to a pretty unnecessary remark made by an employee. I debated on leaving a review for something like this, but decided the owner/manager should know about how one of their employees chooses to treat a customer. I'd come in on a weekday morning, like any previous time, and ordered what I usually get- a chocolate croissant warmed, and an iced caramel macchiato. As I was walking over to the register to pay for my order, one lady was bagging my croissant and ringing me up- she was kind and efficient. She repeated my order as she did so- as she repeated the iced macchiato, another employee, (a blonde young lady), muttered "This isn't Starbucks.." under her breath while making my order. I didn't say anything, or make a scene. Instead, I thanked the cashier, moved away and waited for my order. However, her attitude was very rude, and on that day in particular, I was sort of emotional already due to some bad news from my family. Hearing that woman's remark, made me feel bad for ordering a drink that required more time. Since then, I haven't been back, and now just go to Starbucks or Dunkin, as they don't seem to have a...
Read moreJust avoid at all costs. Go down the street to Knox Bistro and order their baked goods and get coffee from Starbucks, Fairgrounds, or any place but here. The service is TERRIBLE!! Sadly, the manager is the worst offender. She’s even rude to her coworkers. I’ve gone two Saturdays in a row and today she blatantly refused to warm up my pastries and sandwiches!! No apologies, no options, nothing. Just said, “NO I WON’T DO IT!” First of all, you’re in a business of customer service. If you can’t handle servicing people then find a new job or stick to being in the back. Second of all, wash your hands. Touching your hair and adjusting yourself, then proceeding to touch people’s food is unsanitary. I’m sure they will continue to do well since it’s the only bakery around the street, but eventually enough people will get upset and you’ll see a drop in your business. I give people the benefit of the doubt which is why I went again this Saturday, but she clearly hates her job and you’re better off driving somewhere to get baked goods or maybe trying one of their...
Read moreI'm...not sure what happened. One of my favorite pastries in DFW has always been the Kouign-amann from Boulangerie/Village Baking Co. And if the ones I got last night aren't an aberration, those days are done. If you're familiar with a Kouign-amann, you'll know what makes them special - the pastry dough is folded with butter and sugar in between the layers to make a unique texture with a caramelized character that is out of this world. I got home last night to enjoy one, and they have more or less converted their "Kouign-amann" into a chocolate chunk muffin. It now has the consistency somewhere between the inside of a baguette and a croissant, but nowhere in the vicinity of a Kouign-amann. It makes me sad.
The only reason for a second star is that other things I got - the Laminated Brioche, the Quiche Lorraine, the Caneles de Bordeaux - were still very good quality, but those are supporting actors to what was always the star...
