So we then decided to give Butter Café a try since it was close by and I had never been. It’s a small establishment and there was a little bit of a wait, however we were able to get seated. At first glance of the menu, there was a wide array of dishes that also included vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-friendly. There were so many things that sounded good, it was actually hard for me to choose (not vegan or gluten-friendly of course). Friend one had been to Butter Café before but unfortunately did not enjoy the food. However, friend one was willing to give it another chance and this time went with the “Just Egg” omelette with caramelized onions and spinach, a side of the breakfast potatoes, and coffee. I discovered the previous day that friend one likes the coffee to be tongue burning hot. This however was not. It was good, but not nearly hot enough. Friend one enjoyed the omelette but felt it was a little too oily, perhaps from the onions that could have been caramelized a little more. The breakfast potatoes were nice w/ the crunchy bits, however lacked salt and pepper. You could see that there were herbs in the potatoes, however, you could not taste them. Friend two ordered the Paris omelette that included mushrooms, caramelized onions, and goat cheese, with a side of the breakfast potatoes. Friend two added spinach and bacon to the omelette which brought back memories of an omelette that was enjoyed in years past. The buttermilk pancake was sounding good as well, so one pancake was ordered, which was the size of the plate it was served on, 8-9 inches if I were to guess. When asked, “how was the pancake?” I was told, and I quote, “This pancake is life.” Friend one also ordered a lavender mimosa which was enjoyed while trying to guess what type of champagne was used. As for me, there were many choices, but I decided to also get the lavender mimosa and I have to say, it was the best mimosa I have ever had…..quite tasty. Probably b/c the champagne they used was not very dry. The lavender syrup was not overly floral tasting. The mimosa overall had a sweet taste that I enjoyed. I couldn’t make up my mind, so I decided to try a half order of the Chai French toast layered w/ mascarpone cheese. It was very good. The mascarpone was slightly sweet, which meant I did not need a lot of syrup. I was afraid that the chai spices might be overpowering, but there was only a hint of chai, which was great.Unfortunately, unlike the omelettes, the French toast did not come w/ any sides. My two pieces were looking pretty lonely on the plate. As I tried to bring forth a single tear so that my friends would take pity on me, I did something INEVER, EVER do for the purposes of these reviews, and that is try what someone else has on their plate. But since friend one had too many potatoes, most were put on my plate. I appreciated that they were more like smashed potatoes, but they were seriously lacking seasoning despite the visible herbs. Once I doctored them up w/ salt and pepper, they were really good. I also tried some of the pancake and for me, it wasn’t life-giving, but it was really good. So bottom line, I wouldn’t mind going back again and having the same thing or something different. And I definitely have to get the lavender mimosa, or perhaps one of the...
Read moreA few months ago, I was a job coach who worked for a company that helped individuals with disabilities find employment. My client I had at the time did an interview for Butter's and got the job. My client was so excited to begin working a real job as a dishwasher. For weeks we were given the run around on his start date and finally I decided to go up there in person to figure this out. They told me to my face that they filled the position wth someone else and that he was no longer needed. This broke his heart badly and I almost shed a few tears myself because he was so excited. Fast forward a few months later. I return with my friend as a customer to give their food a try. The chai tea French toast was amazing and so were my friend's pancakes. We each ordered a side of meat to go along with our meals and also shared an omelet. The omelet was great however, my friend's bacon was soggy and flimsy (which may be normal, but she likes her's crispy) so my friend politely asked our waiter to return the bacon to the kitchen and have it cooked crispy. When our waiter brought the food back, it was as burnt as coal. She then grew upset because who would even eat that? She didn't make a fuss and just asked him to keep it and then he made a smart remark about how "that was perfectly cooked bacon in the beginning" and that that's how "he likes his bacon." He definitely could have kept that to himself. A few moments later I took a bite of my turkey sausage, that mine you it didn't look appetizing at all, and it wasn't. I asked him to also take it back for lack of seasoning and he, again made a smart comment stating that their meat is 100% natural which is why it tasted like that. I commented saying that it doesn't mean that they didn't have to season it. He seemed very emotional and offended that we asked for these simple requests and he really didn't need to make any comments. When it was time to pay, I gave him my card (which I should've known was a mistake) and charged an extra $1 and some change for a tip to make it an even total and also left a tip in cash. I looked at my account a few days later and saw that he charged an additional $10 on top of the tip I put on my card. I called them and spoke with a female and told her the situation. She said that this was something that "happened all the time" (which I don't even know why she thought that would make me feel better) and proceeded to tell me that they'd handle it whenever they could get to it because they are too busy at the moment. I asked her how long would it take and she said about 7-10 business days for it to return to my card and then stated that since they are so busy, (the owners) they may not get to it any time soon. I was heated and I have been trying to call them ever since and I have left countless messages for the owners but have yet to receive a call back. Please do not spend your hard earned money at this pitiful...
Read moreMy wife and I decided get breakfast here after we happen to be in the area, searched for breakfast places near us, and spotted this one listed as one of the "15 places in Dayton that will blow your taste buds". We had to wait about 15 minutes to get seated, which is to be expected at 10:30 on a Sunday morning.
I ordered a hot apple cider to drink, which was outstanding. My wife was excited to try the Irish coffee. That was far from outstanding. When the coffee arrived it was slightly above ice cold. You could definitely smell the whiskey in it but it seems that instead of putting in any form of Irish Cream in the beverage they just added some cream and a ton of sugar to the coffee. There was actually a sugar slurry at the bottom of the cup, making the beverage undrinkably sweet. I did order a cup of regular coffee as well. We basically poured a full cup of the regular coffee into the Irish Coffee to cut the sweetness. The coffee was hot, full of grounds, and so-so at best.
I ordered the Crab Cake Benedict. Going by just the flavor they were delicious. However I was very disappointed that the poached eggs weren't runny like I would expect with a Benedict. They were poached medium hard. This may not have been as disappointing if there had been lots of hollandaise sauce over the dish. The hollandaise was tasty but not very much was to be found. The English muffins seemed straight out of the Thomas's package and not toasted. Maybe it's just me and the places I've gotten Eggs Benedict before, but I thought the English muffin would be toasted. Everything tasted very good but it was the exact same texture throughout. I had a side of their house potatoes as well which weren't my thing. There's a lot of dill on them, which I'm not a fan of. No worries on that part that's just the way they make them. What i had more of an issue with was the fact the potatoes just seem to have been boiled. They were cooked nicely but there were basically no areas that had been caramelized or crisped up.
My wife ordered the Tiramisu Pancakes which sounded delicious. What she got was basically regular pancakes with chocolate chips and some marscapone with them. These did taste very good just didn't scream tiramisu by the taste at all. The coffee flavored maple syrup we read about on the menu was either non-existent or we just didn't get any. My wife also ordered a side of bacon which she said was fantastic. And it should have been for $3.50 for two fairly small slices.
We wouldn't have been particularly thrilled with this meal for $30, let alone the $44 it actually was before any form of tip. For the most part the flavor was good on things but the meal wasn't anywhere near what I would have expected for the cost.
Overall, the staff was very pleasant to interact with. But between the cost and how disappointing we both found the meals overall we don't have any intentions...
