I had meant to visit for a while, but hadn't realized it was around the side of the building to which it is addressed. If you're looking for it, just walk around to the back of the building right past what looks like a bank drive thru.
Once inside, the decor is cozy and the staff was friendly. I have been four times now: twice for lunch and twice for breakfast.
Breakfast: I had the ham and eh'gg sandwich with a side of grits. The grits were rather standard, but I don't expect much unless the establishment makes a thing of their grits. On a whim I ordered a cornbread pancake on the side.
The Canadian bacon they use is exquisite. Back bacon is a thing of beauty. I was elated because I cannot stand cheap "ham" rolled into a giant sausage like substance that some call "Canadian bacon."
The ham they use was accompanied by the smooth and lightly pronounced flavor of Swiss cheese that nestled next to light and eggs. Further completing the sandwich was the drizzle of maple syrup which accentuated the flavor housed between slices of a Holeman & Finch bun.
The cornbread pancake was best summarized as precisely what I wanted when I ordered it. A slightly sweet and fluffy disc which still had enough of the cornmeal texture to bring it all together.
Next I tried a lunch there and I had the namesake sandwich, the Side chick. Again it was needed in a Holeman and Finch bun, but the ingredients there in made it something familiar and phenomenal at the same time. The Chicken was perfectly prepared such that it was cooked at exactly at the perfect intersection of juicy and crispy. Neither greasy nor a little burnt to a crunch.
I enjoyed the sandwich so much I ended up ordering it again the next visit. Both times with sweet potato waffle fries.
Next breakfast I had was the Chicken n' Hoecakes because it combined the two things that stood out most to me: chicken and cornbread pancakes.
I love the restaurant and the people. It feels like you're coming to a friendly place that makes food...
Read moreI love the name, which is actually the only reason I went. First of all, the parking is very confusing and they need to add some signage to help sort that out because I started off by getting yelled at by a parking attendant that I can’t park in the pay lot to pick up to go, then the restaurant told me to park in the area that’s marked “bank parking only“.
They were out of the first four things I ordered, and I was the first customer of the day. At that point I should’ve just left, but the staff were really nice so I decided to just order what they had. I ended up ordering four different chicken sandwiches to take home for family lunch with sweet potato fries.
None of us were impressed, the chicken was overcooked, which reading the comments seems to be a common problem they have. Also, they needed to change the oil in the fryer, you could tell by the taste of the chicken. The sweet potato fries we’re SO overcooked that they were just crunchy brown blobs.
At $12 a sandwich (with sweet potato fries) we expect a lot more.
Oh well, I guess we’ll just stick with the U-Joint. Food: 0 stars Staff: 2...
Read moreWe swung by today for a lunch because we both wanted some really good grilled chicken. They were some of the highest rated on Google near us and for good reason. My fiancée got the grilled chicken breast with fried green tomatoes and friends, I got the grilled chicken po’boy and fries.
There is something to be said for extremely simple restaurants, less is always more but if you do less/keep it simple, you have to do those few things VERY well and they did. The sweet tea was CASH MONEY(it was perfect) the hand cut fries were immaculate and well seasoned. The grilled chicken spoke for itself and was also very simple and straight forward. There’s really not anywhere in the Decatur area you can get really good chicken for 2 people under 35$.
This was the best chicken in Decatur.
It’s off the beaten path and definitely tucked away so if you decide to go, pop it into google maps and it’ll take you right to the front door.
The lot at the restaurant is paid but there is plenty of street parking near by, even though most of it is paid too, but it’s Decatur, so what you do expect.
10/10 will return and will go...
