Hungry Howie's Pizza & Subs — Restaurant in DeLand

Time for a new review. Last time I visited I was pretty cruel. But after a few years my wife and I decided to visit Hungry Howie's Deland again to see how they've done.

The store is remarkably cleaned up, with new drink equipment, new counter tops and tile work. The old ratty tables have all been replaced with much better stuff that fits their business better.

The employees aren't just friendly, it's apparent that they are happy to work there and their focus is on the customer. My previous time there the parmesan cheese and pepper flakes had been replaced by a sign that if you wanted them you'd be paying extra. The dispensers for in-store eaters are back, as are the napkins! The customer focus of the place is striking.

We ordered two large pizzas, one with two kinds of pepperoni and the other with double sausage and no marinara sauce. That drives my wife's digestive system into full revolt and I don't need to get into the details. She took or order and then repeated it back to ensure it was right. That didn't happen last time!

Then, as some here have remarked, the kitchen made one of the pizzas wrong. But instead of just handing the pizza to us and daring us to find the problem, the server announced the problem and asked if we could take the time for them to make a pizza the way we ordered. We didn't have to catch the problem, THEY did and then they proposed a solution.

We accepted and she let us keep the mistakenly made one as well. The pizzas were great. The crust was tasty, the Cajun seasoning was perfect, the sauce was flavorful with a great mix of spice, the cheese was perfect and there was lots of it. But the biggest improvement of all was that the pepperonis were crowded all over my pizza. I had more in one slice than I had on the entire pizza last time. And they tasted incredible, taking the focus of the flavor in an assertive way like pepperoni is supposed to. The sausage pizza was similar, with more sausage on one slice than we got on the entire pizza when we gave Hungry Howie's a well deserved bad review last time.

Hungry Howie's DeLand is 100% redeemed. Now the place is fun to visit, has great food and greater employees. What an...

I placed an online order for only 2 boxes at Pizza at 11am. The moment they opened. Once order was placed. The message states will take 45 minutes to be delivered....

I placed my order exactly at 11am so I assume I was the first order or at least there was not a great big number of orders before me. 11:45 passed. and I thought. Will probably be here by 12 at the latest. Still nothing. I am at work and I got this for my team to have a team lunch. After my meeting, from 12-1pm. I go up to the front to obviously get my pizzas.. The security guard advised no one came..... They did not arrive until 1:15pm. 2 hours and 15 minutes after I placed an order the minute they opened. When I went up front to confront the delivery person (who I payed a 20% online before delivery which was stupid of me) they just left the pizzas at the desk and left.... not even an apology for showing up 1 hour and 30 minutes late. I was told to wait 45 minutes. waited tripled that at 135 minutes... completely unprofessional and didn't even have the manners to wait til I arrived to apologize. Wow....I never do these reviews but this place...

02/21/22: Last night my wife and I ordered ahead for pick up. We just ordered two chef salads.

For the second time in two weeks we waited in the parking lot till the app said, Order Up.” But twice now we we got that notice and pulled to the window we had to wait an extended period of time. Last night there were cars waiting behind us because our order wasn’t ready in spite of what the app said.

I am wondering if they are just punching a clock inside to satisfy the corporate office. It wastes our time and the time of the people waiting behind.

Just be honest, Howie, and don’t tell me it’s ready when it’s not.

09/10/22: For fast food, my wife and I love this place. We've only been inside a couple of times and it was very clean both times. It's great if you want to get out of the car for a quick bite.

Downloading and using the app to order and pick up is super easy and quick.

Their hot subs, served like a calzone, are awesome. It's a great dough that use that really make the meal. Their salads are one of my favs. I make a meal on salad only often.
