Fine dining with outstanding service staff in a cheap diner setting.
We had an event to attend in Denton and I'd considered The Catch because of the menu, but discarded the idea because it was a "nice night out" for us and I thought the atmosphere would be too casual.
BUT when we ended up running late but starving, I thought the counter-ordering setup would be quick and get us to our event on time, so we popped on for a quick cup of gumbo with plans to go somewhere else after the event.
OMGAWSH, we were floored! THE GUMBO WAS DELICIOUS. And the staff were surprisingly personable for the setup. I mentioned how amazing it was to enjoy a commercial dish that wasn't over-salted, unused to the experience of actually adding (Slap Ya Mama Cajun) seasoning at the table and still be just perfectly seasoned!
It was so tasty, we returned after our event for more. Unfortunately, the gumbo had just run out before we ordered — no surprise, really — so we wl considered the shrimp etouffee. Remembering my praise earlier about the perfect seasoning, we were offered to sample before ordering. I said it tasted a little salty, to which I was told they'd been told that day's batch was a bit salty from a customer earlier. What a memory, and what consideration that showed us!
We ended up sharing one cup of etouffee with extra rice to try to cut the salt, somewhat successfully (I mean, I am used to getting more salt than I like, usually), followed by a basket of fried whitefish with fries and hush puppies, which was fried perfectly. We even had enough to take some home to crisp up in an air fryer for lunch the next day.
But the stand out with the fried basket, for me, was the fresh made sauces: a house sauce (a kind of stand in for ketchup for the fries), really tasty tarter sauce and remoulade (which I specially requested because I like sauces and saw on the menu it was served on their po' boy sandwiches).
I could almost tuck up to a bowl of their remoulade and devour it with a spoon like a bowl of soup. It was amazing!
We were there as they closed, so were especially surprised the cook came out to ask if we liked the fish and thanked us for coming in!
Oh! The icing on the cake? Really affordable. If I lived close, I would go by for a cup of gumbo and good cheer every day, I'm sure.
Next week, my husband will be visiting Houston and he's already mapped out one of The Catch locations 7 miles from his hotel. 😋
I absolutely will pick up food at The Catch every time I get a chance to go to Denton, which suddenly feels like not...

I wasn’t going to post any review until the store manager stuck to what I call the “corporate response” and had no empathy or acceptance in any way.
I ordered the Captain’s combo and a side of Gumbo. It tasted good and seemed cooked as it should be; however, that was until I woke up at 2:30 in the morning. I was on the toilet with diarrhea and puking multiple times during the night, and was out most of the next day sleeping and having no appetite.
When I spoke to the store manager, I prefaced the conversation by saying I was not interested in a refund or free food, just simply for them to be more careful.
The store manager began to do what I call the “corporate response” by saying there was no way it was their food, and since noone else called in as sick, it had to be just something I ate that day or some other factor. She then ADMITTED that a crew person did call in with a “24 hour flu bug” which then she said was “impossible” that I could have got because that employee called off. This store manager forgets that the people with the flu bug are contagious before and after symptoms show; therefore, that employee could have given it to another person who was present the day my order was made. This person could have touched the container my food was put in or on my rice; all it takes is one little drop of contamination to cause someone to get sick.
As the food left my body and after about 24 hours, I felt better and had an appetite again. The fact that this manager didn’t even want to acknowledge that maybe something could have happened, and that she would review with the staff about safety precautions is why I write this. She instead treated me as if I was the cause of my own sickness, even after stating I got sick after eating food from their restaurant. This is not acceptable and this manager needs further training herself, especially when you have a customer that is asking for nothing in return but a simple “I’m sorry, I will look into this, and remind employees about food...
Read moreI loved the catch in Lewisville.. there's sometimes 23 times a week. Catfish and shrimp.. or just Catfish.. or just shrimp with the Red potatoes. The catfish and shrimp were always fresh and yeah, not overcooked
I heard there was one in denton. They'll let by the same owner.. and drove from Dallas to check them out.
It seemed busier than it actually was because it was well understaffed.
Slow orders cause long line and long waits.
I got my order called and was okay, because I was by myself. When placed in the order one was new.. and because I ordered extra shrimp.. i needed assistance to ring it up.. but then that person got it wrong.
I ended up not getting my extra shrimp, and corrected them.. after too long of a wait, I got my receipt and saw they didn't ring up the order for the extra shrimp..
and even though evident they had forgot to get it to me...
I went up, and explained not to worry about it because I wasn't charged for it.
Management was nice enough to offer to do it anyway. I told him it was nice of him, but not necessary.
I know how people complain to get something for nothing!
So on my way out, I thought I would get the iced tea to go.
They were still out.
Long drive back to Dallas.
Will I go back again. Yes but not a special drive just to go there.
And I made many special drives to go to the one in Lewisville!
Matter of fact, I had to be in Denton, the other day, but opted for a great burger. At what used to be independent burger. They have a new name but same owner.... same menu only the name's been changed to protect the innocent.
I'm confident the Catch will get it together... if they haven't already!
I told them twice they were out of both iced teas, sweet and regular.
I tried to take 1 to go.....
