As someone who has been coming here for about 20 years, it makes me very sad to write this review. I have been here twice in the last two months after not coming for years and the food has gone downhill tremendously. The service has always been meh so that was pretty much the same. I got the tacos Al Carbon (which was always my favorite thing there) the flavor was not very good at all. My daughter got regular hard shell ground beef tacos and there was too much taco seasoning and she actually had a severe headache afterwards. The beans and rice were mid and even the chips tasted stale and my limes were dry. The time before that my boyfriend and I got smothered burritos. I thought maybe if this time I got something different it would be better but I was extremely disappointed both times like you know how you feel super unsatisfied especially when you’re expecting something different and delicious. It seems to me like maybe they don’t have to worry about making the food good anymore because the people in the neighborhood now probably think it’s fine and will eat there anyway… but with all of the amazing Mexican food in Denver, I will...
Read moreThis was a pretty solid place all around. My folks come here quite a bit, and have been recommending it for awhile, and we finally made it in.
They easily sat a group of 6 adults and 2 children upon walk-in on a Thursday evening. The place was pretty packed. It doesn't seem like they coordinate and seat people well though: I saw 2 people sitting in a booth that would have accommodated 6, and saw 5 people crammed into a 4-top with a table set on the end, sticking into the walkway.
Guacamole salad starter was quite good: creamy guacamole with chunks throughout. Chips and salsa were spicy, but in a good way.
My carnitas platter was good: meat was tasty, if a bit on the smaller side for a portion. Had a side chile relleno, which are my favorite. The relleno was just alright. Nothing special, wasn't very hard, and was a bit flavorless minus the green chile on it.
Overall, I liked it well enough. Would I drive out of my way to come here? Naw. Would I come here if I was in the area and had a hankering for Mexican food? Yeah, probably.
3.5 stars, but the very nice staff...
Read moreAny person who does not give La Cocinita five stars, hands down, does not know good Mexican food or good people. We love Mexican food and the food at La Cocinita is the best in town! The green chile is delicious, the chips are warm, crispy, and plentiful! The carnitas are excellent, the burrito supremes are great, and the rellenos are wonderful!! There has never been a dish we have ordered we didn't enjoy. The margaritas are good and the beers are always cold.Top it off with a round of sopapillas slathered in honey and you will be in heaven!
Ambiance? We have been going to La Cocinita since my daughter was an infant and she would only eat rice and beans. Nothing more. Her brother and I would walk from our home almost nightly so she could eat. She is now 13 and we still go there frequently. Jose is the best as are all the other wait staff-we feel like family there. They know my daughter by name and take care of her as if she was still the baby they once knew
GREAT AMBIANCE, GREAT FOOD,...
