We have been going to West 29th for years and always enjoyed ourselves. Until now. I called mid-morning 9/16 to reserve a table for 4. Got an answering machine with a recording asking for reservation details, date, time number of people, our phone number. It ended with a promise they would confirm by phone or text. That evening I has not gotten verification, so I called again. I spoke with a pleasant woman who took my reservation for 5pm the next day. At 4:14 yesterday I had an incoming call from West 29th, a man on the other end stated he got my message and had booked us for 5:15. I told him I already had booked a reservation yesterday for 5pm. He did not acknowledge what I said and simply repeated he had book us for 5:15. So I repeated that we already had a reservation for 5pm and he should double check. He then declared they were overbooked and he had bumped us to 5:15. I started to replay that I was not happy to hear that when he hung up on me! We met our friends at the restaurant at 5pm and a female hostess asked if we had a reservation, I paused and said yes at 5pm and gave her our name. She smiled, pulled menus and was ready to seat us when a man approached and told her to have us wait at the bar as he had bumped us to 5:15. I asked the man if he was the one who had called me and he said yes. I asked to speak with a manager and he said he was the manager. I then asked for the name and contact information of the owner and he replied "if you're trying to get me in trouble it won't work. I said I want to speak to the owner about how you hung up on me in the middle of a conversation earlier. To which he said, "if you're going to get hostile", at that point I turned away from him and joined our group at the bar as it was clear that his social and customer skills were seriously lacking, and I wanted to salvage what was left of our plans for a nice dinner out with friends. About 15 minutes later we were seated on the back patio, which I had requested as it's lovely and away from the street. WE WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE OUT THERE THE ENTIRE TIME! By the way, their server Eric is a gem. He's waited on us in the past as well and is always attentive, easy and fun to talk with. While other customers were also arriving and being seated, the place was not even half full by the time we left. It was clear the managers allegation that they were overbooked was not valid. Even IF it was, the "manager" should've started his phone conversation with an apologetic explanation for why our reservation was being pushed back. There was no excuse for being treated so rudely and being forced to wait to be seated. Other than the manager enjoys flaunting his power. We will not be returning and we will be sharing our cautionary experience with our family and friends and here as well. This manager lost this business at a minimum 4 good customers. Likely many more. This manager should be replaced with someone who cares about their customers. I'm attaching a photo of us on the patio. Not sure if the time stamp will show but it was taken at 5:48. See how NOT crowded it was! UPDATE TO "OWNERS" REPLY: For Clarity, my issue is with your treating me (and others reviewers) rudely and disrespectfully. Including hanging up on me mid conversation. When I was making our reservation with the pleasant woman by phone I did request the back patio. She commented that it wasn't open but that the other patio area would be and I told her that was fine. When you finally saw fit to seat us you headed for the back patio and I commented "Oh the back patio is open? " You said that's what you asked for. Which is true. Regardless of where you chose to seat us there were plenty of tables empty and available AND again the issue is your treatment of your customers will lose this once fine...
Read moreI want to love this place. I really really do. I have met the owner a couple of times and I have a lot of respect for him. I know this place can be better but we had a pretty rough experience! I will point out the good stuff - I would give 2.5 stars if that was an option. First of all, it was Sunday brunch and my Dad LOVES corned beef hash so we decided on the restaurant that was 1 block away from the house for this very reason. When we arrived they were not very busy. But they seemed busy. We sat for almost 15 minutes before the server came for our drink order. This was quite frustrating for me considering the brunch drink menu did not include prices. I became anxious because my decision was based on the price of the bottomless mimosas! How much would I drink? Would it be worth it? Would it really be bottomless? Would I prefer something else? None of these questions could be answered until the server came. I asked him if there was a reason the prices were not on the menu. He was not able to answer as he was new (not a good sign off the bat). I decided on the bottomless grapefruit mimosa which was a highlight. Took quite a while to get our drinks. My friend's Irish coffee did not seem to have whipped cream on it per the description - perhaps it melted? We order - access denied for Dad, they ran out of corned beef hash yesterday! Yikes. That would have been helpful information when we sat down. Oh! Also, at one point the server informed us that the bartender was also brand new and in training. Probably not helpful information. Another solid 30 minutes before our food came. Another side note, our newbie server, adorable and sweet, doing his best, not properly trained at all, was very on top of keeping my mimosa full. He sensed my polite irritation from the get go. Anyways, back to the food. Cold. (granted, my salmon dish was meat to be cold but the other's were supposed to be warm. no one likes cold hollandaise or cold runny yolks!) Quite tasty, but cold. It had been sitting on the warming table for a while. I liked my salmon but the 'mimosa' eggs were super weird. Seemed like hard boiled eggs, separated white and yolk, and put into a blender and served in little piles of minced egg. So odd. Took us a while to order another round of drinks. Another side note - I was like man, they would be totally screwed if this place was full. The restaurant proceeded to fill up as we sat and watched in awe and horror. We literally watched the open kitchen blow it. They let food sit and pile up under the warmers for ages! No one seemed at all concerned about getting the food out so it was hot. Not the chef, not the expediter, not the servers, not the random other employees working on seemingly less prudent tasks like making coffee and stocking. If you are going to have an open kitchen you'd better be ON POINT. They were shockingly not. I went up to get my own ketchup that we asked for. Yikes beyond measure. This is all very sad because the place has much potential as the menu is really nice and I loved my grapefruit mimosa. I will likely not return and go back to my stand by, sloan's bar & grill which consistently nails it every single time. OH ONE LAST THING. AFTER we were done eating, the server informed us that now they have some fresh corned beef hash in case we were still hungry! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Super unnecessary information! Thanks for nothing! Why even say it? It just...
Read moreMy girlfriend is a vegetarian, so we don't often frequent typical Americana restaurants that often neglect real food options for those who choose to stay away from meats. That said we decided to give the West 29th a try.
The menu was not really expensive nor cheap. There were several things on the menu that looked really nice from the Halibut curry (replaced by Mahi Mahi for seasonal reasons), to grass-fed filets and crab macaroni and cheese. There were only two non-salad vegetarian options - Ratatouille Lasagna and Pesto pasta. She went with the Ratatouille although there is a 20 minute wait for the lasagna to heat. I went with the hand-packed burger with caramelized onions and cheddar cheese.
After enjoying a stein of Warsteiner and a glass of Pinot Noir while munching on house-made breadsticks, our food arrived. The Lasagna was actually the tastiest vegetarian lasagna that I have ever tasted. The flavors of the potato noodles, ricotta and veggies came out quite nicely with a pleasant texture that was never mushy. My burger was quite good as well, with a homemade parmesan bun and steamed and slightly buttered veggies (broccoli, green beans, and greens). The burger was cooked to my request (medium-rare/medium) and was juicy as well as flavorful.
To top it all off, we finished with the creme brulee. The crust was well caramelized and flavorful. I found myself sucking on to savor the flavor. The custard was a very well-balanced with a nice sweetness without being too sweat.
This definitely wasn't an in-and-out experience but rather one to take time and savor good food and drinks. The staff was friendly and did a good job. I will definitely...
