Root Down - A Disappointing Layover Bite I recently visited Root Down, nestled in the bustling terminal C of the Denver Airport, with the hope of killing some time with a decent meal. Despite the alluring promise of a fresh, local-flavored dining experience, my visit unfortunately fell short of expectations. I started with the travel bloody mary, eager to unwind with a classic cocktail. The tomato mixer was palatable, but the drink was underwhelmingly light on the booze, leaving me craving a more potent libation. Moving on to the breakfast burrito, I was impressed by the swift service, which had my food arriving at my table almost too quickly for comfort. However, my burrito looked as if it had been waiting under a heat lamp for its moment in the spotlight, leading me to suspect pre-preparation. The exterior shell was as dry and tough as a pie crust that had seen better days, which was a stark contrast to the soft and chewy texture I had anticipated. The interior of the burrito fared slightly better, with the egg and meat displaying some good flavor combinations. Yet, the overall experience was marred by the dryness that seemed to have permeated every layer. The lack of moisture and the stale taste of the tortilla overshadowed any potential delight the filling could have offered. The service, however, was a highlight. The staff was attentive and friendly, which helped to ease the disappointment of the meal. The pricing was reasonable, especially considering the airport locale. This, coupled with the convenient location and the promise of a more varied menu, has me willing to give Root Down another shot. With a heavy heart, I can only award this airport eatery two stars. While the service was commendable and the price point was fair, the quality of the food was not up to par. For those looking for a quick bite before a flight, I would recommend keeping an open mind and perhaps exploring other items on the menu. With a bit of luck, you might stumble upon a hidden gem that redeems the overall experience. But as for my breakfast burrito encounter, it was a forgettable...
Read moreI don’t like leaving negative reviews, but this was… not good. It wasn’t too crowded, the hostess and the support staff very friendly. My son and I ordered the mini sliders and the vegan breakfast burrito, respectively. I asked to make sure mine was vegan and that both were gluten free, as we are both intolerant, especially my son. I specified THREE times (once when I ordered and then twice more before she walked away) that mine was vegan and both were gluten free. She verified each time that yes they were. She brought our food out and walked away before I even registered it. I saw that mine was a side of plain arugula, a side of plain potato wedges, and a pile of what I assumed was the breakfast burrito. I ate a bite and it was literally the spiciest thing I’ve tasted. Ever. My son ate a few bites while we waited for her to come back so i could ask about the missing tortilla. Eventually she came back and when I asked she said “I guess it wasn’t gluten free or something” and walked off again before I could reply. I tried to eat it anyway and cut up my potatoes and mixed them in, in hopes that it would mellow out how spicy it was, but it was still so bad. My whole mouth was on fire. She finally walked by and I was able to get her attention. I asked if there was a way to tone it down a bit maybe a side of dressing or something, when my son said his stomach was hurting. I turned to ask him what was going on and walked off. She came back with a side of dressing and asked if he was ok. I said I thought so but wanted to make sure that his bread was gluten free, at which point she said no, it wasn’t. I tasted the dressing and could tell it had dairy and asked “is this vegan?” She said yes. I said “so there’s no dairy in this?” And she said “oh, yeah there’s milk in it.” I gave up trying to save it. I couldn’t even eat my $20 “burrito” it was so spicy. My son ended up throwing up and had a terrible stomach ache for the rest the day. She didn’t even apologize for screwing up our...
Read moreThe a top choice to eat in the airport. Rootdown is a Denver native restaurant originally located in the highlands right outside of downtown. This locations quality of dishes match the deliciousness of the highlands location that brings locals in regularly. I like that they keep the airplane vibe and decorations, especially because they are in the airport. If they left out the airliner vibe I just don't know if that would be right.
At our table we started out with the duck wings and they were excellent, living up to the waiters recommendation. After that we had the burger which came on a pretzel bun and 3 of the salads they make. Each dish was full of flavor and delicious. My pretzel burger was great in getting me full to sleep on my long flight.
Meals were around 17 each and a bottle of wine was 48. I would easily go back here with another group at the airport. I'd say hold out for one of the interior seats, not one facing the terminal with hundreds of people walking by. Besides for the airliner decorations there are a few living walls with plants growing from them which reminds me. Rootdown is a farm to table restaurant with fresh ingredients from local farmers. Maybe that's what makes this place so great.
You'll need about 45 to 55 minutes to dine here once you are seated. I hope you enjoy this place as much as I do. If you go here know you are getting a local Denver favorite right in the airport so you can catch it flying in or out. If you reach the main location you will have a nice time and recognize my review saying the food agreeing that the food is equally delicious. Here is a picture of my duck wings so you know a little about...
