South of the Border — Restaurant in Desert Hot Springs

I just ate here today and after 10 years of vacationing in Desert Hot Springs, this is my favorite Mexican restaurant! The food is absolutely delicious and I can't even stop talking about it. I was worried once they reopened it wouldn't be the same, but damm was I wrong! Amazing authentic food with amazing service. I am always coming here when visiting. You must eat here, you won't regret it!!! I'm so happy they reopened and I wish them the best always!

update im extremely disappointed. Did my yearly desert hot springs trip and was really looking forward to coming here for my birthday to only see they are closed... on both Friday and my birthday Saturday. This is the 2nd time they were just closed on a random weekend. I come here looking forward to eat here and google says they are open. When I call the number doesn't work. My birthday trip was not fulfilled because I always eat here for a birthday dinner. Really really...

Disappointing experience – would not recommend

We arrived at the restaurant around 9 PM and were welcomed by a waitress who assured us the kitchen was still open. We sat down, ordered two beers, and began to enjoy them. However, a few minutes later, the same waitress came back to inform us that the kitchen was actually closed and that our only options were two seafood dishes: shrimp cocktail or ceviche.

We agreed and ordered one of each, but she brought two shrimp cocktails instead. Unfortunately, the dish was absolutely inedible – the shrimp still had the black intestinal vein, and the flavor was off-putting, to say the least.

Despite the poor quality of the food and the mistake in our order, we were still charged the full amount – over $60 for two beers and two bowls of unpleasant shrimp in watery broth. No discount, no apology, nothing.

The food was decent. However, the waitress was not having a good day. We were greeted, sat, and ordered. She did not smile. When asked questions, she walked away and answered with her back turned at us. She served us food while also having food in her mouth. When customers came in that she knew, her entire demeanor switched to happy and fully engaged. We were ready to leave and waited on a to go box she took her time to talk to others, snack, and hand us our check before remembering we were waiting on the box. The place was already dead and she was the only one on the floor. When it came time for us to pay, her attitude completely changed once we had to sign. Customer service is not a difficult skill to obtain...
