I visited Common Pub on 8/9/2023 and had a wonderful time. My waitress, Miranda, was exceptional. I ate alone and received the type of attention normally reserved for a 10 man party.
Every drink came within 5 minutes and I was checked on multiple times throughout my meal. When you're out for a quick afternoon escape from your day job, this type of service is invaluable.
I had the duck fat fried chicken, and it came with potato salad, coleslaw, and an assortment of pickled vegetables. The chicken was very good and reasonable in price. There was no greasy, flat aftertaste that you sometimes get with low quality fried chicken. The breading was crispy and, thank god, there wasn't too much of it (cough! Beans and Cornbread cough!) Was it as good as let's say a Gus's Fried Chicken? No, but Gus's isn't a bar and it isn't as affordable either.
The potato salad was actually very unique and tasted as though there might've been some curry or turmeric in the recipe. I really liked it, and was glad it wasn't overly sweet or mushy like some potato salad in the area. The coleslaw was coleslaw. I really liked the pickled vegetables.
The atmosphere here is extremely laid back. It's not a hipster overload like say, Bronx Bar. If you came here in the afternoon, you could easily get some work done and enjoy yourself due to the service and clientele.
Thank you for the wonderful lunch Miranda and...
Read moreI’ve been going to this restaurant inconsistently for two years, occasionally tagging along with a friend who is a regular here.
Always ordering our favorite thing, their happy hour burger deal. Such an amazing price for incredible food!
I’ve brought out of town visitors a few times to show them this gem of a restaurant in midtown. Recently the service by a server, Nikki, has been really disappointing.
This server doesn’t refill waters (even after we ask), doesn’t greet our table (but we’ve seen him greet other tables), won’t speak to us, gave us in correct orders. He has passively thrown our napkins on the table, and walked away from our table when someone was still ordering, then brought her a drink she didn’t even want.
Being a server myself for many years, I am usually the type to excuse some behaviors like, “maybe they’re just busy”, “maybe he’s having a bad day”, “maybe he just really hates this shift”. But every time I’ve had him as a server there’s a bad attitude following, it creates a really awkward/ uncomfortable dining experience.
Also, being a previous server usually I would rather speak directly to a manager so their restaurant doesn’t gain a bad reputation, but there is usually no one else on the floor when we are there.
Common Pub is a great restaurant, and I will continue to go for the food, but I really hope this issue...
Read moreThis was one of the best meals we've had in a long while. Everything was delicious, we started with chicken wings with black garlic buffalo sauce. The wings were a good size and the sauce was tasty although it could have been a bit spicier and the blue cheese sauce they served on the side was really good.
For entrees I had the fried chicken dinner and it is easily the best fried chicken I've had since moving to Michigan. It's everything southern style fried chicken should be. The breading was phenomenal, very crispy and tasty and seasoned beautifuly. The meat on the chicken itself was moist and flavorful because of the brine. The curried potato salad was unique and a welcome change from the drenched in mayo potato salad you usually get. The pickled veggies were another standout. I also ordered duck fat fries and they are my new favorite fries.
My wife got the burger which was also delicious. The toppings were fresh and tasty. The uncommon sauce was extremely good. Everyone does a garlic mayo sauce as a signature sauce these days but this one stood out. She got the homemade harissa chips as a side and she enjoyed them as well.
They had bread pudding for dessert and I couldn't resist. I love bread pudding and while my wife usually doesn't she quite enjoyed this one. It tasted like layers of french toast squished together and it was...
