I've never been to Banh Mi Cafe before but have heard good things about it in the past. We were hungry after grocery shopping and decided to try it based on what we've heard from friends.
It was a lazy Sunday noon and the place was mostly empty, a few customers sparsely dotted the spartan dining area. We waited patiently before the cashier acknowledged our presence some 15 minutes later. He looked up, took our order, and went back to rambling in a mixture of broken English words and Vietnamese. From what I can make of it, he'd screwed up the order prior to ours and was having an episode of pot and kettle with the ladies prepping the bread.
I paid no further attention to the exchange and went back to waiting. It was about some 35 minutes later when one of the ladies asked if we'd ordered anything. Apparently, the cashier hasn't even sent our order to them and we'd been waiting for nothing.
Once we've informed her with our order, she went back to prepping sandwiches. It was around this time that we noticed her broken glove. Her fingernail filled with gunk was exposed in full view as she digs into various vegetables and meats. In between all of this, she was handling boxes, cash, and tapping away at the cash register keypad. Any feelings of hunger has left me at this point as I'm quite fed up with these nonsense. Some minutes later, the cashier stopped by our table and asked us if we wanted to order anything. The banh mi finally came out at this point and it went straight to the trash.
I cannot put into words how upsetting this experience was and I will not be going back. If you enjoy sandwiches seasoned with nonchalance with fingernail gunk, by all...
Read moreWe went to Bánh Mì Cafe on a very cold and windy morning. Outside temperature was hovering right above 30 degrees F. We decided to give this place a try. We had the Phở Tái (Pho with rare filet mignon) dining in; a cup of Vietnamese ice coffee (Cà phê sữa đá) made into a to go cup; and a Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng (Roast Pork banh mi #1) made to go.
The Pho Tai was delicious. I was very pleased with the flavor of the broth and the taste of the beef. I could taste the sweetness of the rare beef slightly cooked in the full flavored beef broth. The coffee was rich and strong as expected. It reminded me of the coffee I had when I was in Lâm Đồng, Vietnam, where some of the best coffee Vietnam has to offer are grown.
We ate the banh mi later on in the afternoon. Due to the cold weather, the banh mi did not taste at its best. However, the meat retained its flavor and it got us through the hard trekking day at Tallulah Gorge. Our Pho meal included the coffee and Banh Mi for two came up to $30. We did not have to eat anything else during the day until dinner time.
I spent a little bit of time and conversed with the lady owner. She was pleasant to talk to and was hard at work while we chat about the homeland. This place is ran by she and her husband who was hard at work in the kitchen while she tends to the customers in the front. I had a chance to experience many Pho places around the Pleasant Hill area. I can say Banh Mi Cafe had the best flavor for...
Read moreAfter trying the "award winning" Lee's Bakery today with my expectations falling very flat😓 and testing out others close by my work, there is no doubt that Banh Mi Café has THE BEST BANH MI's in ATL!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯
Their Banh mi's are always FRESH and they have varieties that you will not find ANYWHERE ELSE. SO MANY VEGETARIAN OPTIONS: Mushroom, pineapple, tofu, avocado banh mis!!!! Friendly for people who don't eat pork - Shredded chicken, chicken tenderloin, steak, shrimp, egg.
If you haven't tried their mushroom banh mi yet, you are missing out. My mother, who doesn't venture out of her comfort zone often, will go to Banh Mi Café to exclusively order the mushroom banh mi. She even introduced it to her friends and they love it too.
I have still yet to find any other banh mi restaurants that even have a mushroom banh mi. My personal favorite is the shredded chicken. So many other places just don't get it right.
Their pickled carrot/radish topping for the banh mis are unmatched leaving the banh mi perfectly moist, never soggy. The bread is perfectly crispy and soft and is always warm!
I might regret posting this review later on if their prices go up. (Very reasonable-please stay the same and never sacrifice your quality) I just wish it was closer to my office so I could have it for lunch...
