Strange Matter Coffee MSU Union — Restaurant in East Lansing

Genuinely probably the best coffee place I have been to, and that's saying a lot as I go to a lot of coffee shops and am also an ex-barista. When I found out Strange Matter was coming to the MSU Union I was so excited to try them and they do NOT disappoint.

First of all the drinks are delicious. I've tried pretty much every latte and they are all very yummy. Literally the elixir of life. The chai actually tastes like chai and not like the concentrate that so many coffee places use. They have decaf espresso which is great if you can't do caffeine but still want a latte, and they have plenty of alternative milk options.

Second of all, the donuts are actually incredible. They are literally gourmet donuts. I don't know who's baking them but whoever's responsible is gracing my tastebuds. My favorite is the lavender lemon donut but they are all genuinely so good. Plus, depending on the time of year seasonal donuts are in the rotation. There are so many creative donuts I've seen.

Lastly, the atmosphere and the service there is great. All of the employees are so friendly and the vibes in there are always positive and welcoming. The line can be 20 people deep but the baristas there are serving drinks at lightning speed with maximum efficiency. One would say they are the backbone of modern society. Also, I have to add, as a student at MSU I really appreciate that SM is bringing positive energy to a space that was the site of a horrible event last semester. I feel that they are helping to bring students back into a place that is meant to be a safe space for students to congregate.

I love Strange Matter! Having a location on campus is a total lifesaver for students like me who don’t have a car and can’t easily get to their other shops. The coffee is spectacular—you can truly taste the quality in every cup. Their doughnuts are just as incredible and are my favorite in East Lansing (or honestly, anywhere). The staff is amazing—always so kind and welcoming, no matter how busy it gets. Special shoutout to Eli for their awesome energy and for getting me hooked on iced coffee (I usually only drink hot so this was a big move for me lol). I also really appreciate Strange Matter’s values—they actively support important causes like LGBTQIA+ rights, women’s equality, reproductive justice, and more. It makes supporting them feel even more meaningful. As a now-alum, I’m truly going to miss stopping by for their delicious drinks, treats, and the all-around fantastic atmosphere. Strange Matter has excellent doughnuts, tea, and coffee, and they are incredibly kind and easy to work with. Eli helped our department with a large catering order for an event, and he was very helpful throughout the process. The order was delivered at the time we had requested without issue. The staff reached out prior to the event to ensure they had all the details correct, which they did! The entire staff is positive, helpful, and communicative. I can't recommend Strange Matter enough.
