I began to transition off animal foods about 3 years ago. For about the last year I have 99% vegan (maybe a dozen meals involving animal products), and I have been fully vegan for about 90 days. Over these last few years, I found it frustrating at how few options I had at various places, so it is a massive relief to find a place I can order literally anything on the menu.
But it is not just that this place only serves vegan food, it is also how good it is. The spring rolls were phenomenal and HUGE, the dumplings were amazing, the filling in particular was extremely well seasoned and tasty (the wrapper was a little different probably because it is vegan, but still extremely good) I then had a main course of a mixed vegetables and shrimp with their general tso's equivalent. The shrimp were almost like the real thing, they reminded me of fake crab meat that is used in sushi, what was odd is they replicated the texture and especially the fishy taste. The fishiness was so realistic it was somewhat off-putting (but that is not a bad thing for people looking for a replacement)
The Tsos "chicken" though was to die for, I have not had something this realistic since the last time I had actual general tsos with chicken. It also didn't go out of its way to completely replicate the texture, so there wasn't an uncanny valley experience with the food where it was too much like the real thing. It was fluffier but still with a similar texture, delicious fry breading, and amazing sauce -- just freaking phenomenal sauce with tons of peppers. The mixed veggies were also amazingly fresh, rice was great.
This is some of the best food I have had in years, definitively the best vegan food I have had. The food was also extremely hot and fresh, I could tell nothing was left sitting around. The wait staff was also amazing. The only complaint I have could also be seen as a massive compliment and that is that the shrimp are simply too realistic, they did too good a job with them.
I told my server that it was very very very very good, about that many times, and I mean it. I will definitely be coming back, I just hope I can convince my non-vegan friends to join me. Though one thing that might help is one of them has gluten sensitivities and they serve plenty of gluten free options for them, clearly marked (which is...
Read moreThis restaurant has a great variety of food for the bad eaters and good healthy eaters alike. I love how they have kale and seaweed, which are very nutritious super foods that also taste good. The broccoli roots and the spicy chickpeas I had different periods of preferring to eat large quantities of them every week because they're healthy and taste good. Last time I went there, I like how they also had hot temperature cauliflower and tomato dish and their eggplant was my guilty pleasure, yum yum! The restaurant owners are very virtuous and treat people very nice, because I know them personally and worked for them as a volunteer for a week. The broccoli hot dish is also very healthy, and usually I like how there are green leaves about and sometimes they also taste good. I like the availability of both hot and cold water about, because I am particular about drinking warm water. I don't like to drink cold water. It's always fun at the restaurant. I can't hold back from going every week. One time, during the holidays, I got my mom to go to SuTao three times in a week. On Mother's Day Sunday in 2012, there was even a rainbow over the restaurant. There's a beautiful bamboo small forest nearby and trees by SuTao. The male restaurant owner is very smart (and has a PhD in math) and humble and would also talk to us and teach us a lot. The female restaurant owner told me that I mattered more than the dishes and I was what's important when I broke something while volunteering for them. The male restaurant owner was also very caring and closed my door in my room at their gigantic house and said it's to make my room warmer. I was very motivated while working for them and sometimes worked 12 hours while feeling energetic the entire time, and I washed their dishes every day at their home and massaged the female restaurant owner most days and cared for them in other ways; all in all we had a very healthy relationship, for you see I am not motivated to work for everyone. I can appear to be very lazy around toxic, egotistic, or impolite people, yet I felt so motivated around this couple. Go SuTao!...
Read moreBeing vegan for almost a couple years now, I was really eager to go to SuTao with my wife when we knew we'd be in the Philly suburbs. Seeing so many positive reviews, I figured that we were in for a treat.
I honestly could not have been more wrong.
From the sign in the window - touting an award from 12 years ago, to the food itself - everything appeared old.
I totally 'get' that a small, mom and pop asian buffet is likely to have a stark interior and a chinese take-out feel to it. And, with good food that would have been more than fine.
However, the food - while flavored well - was horrible ... like it had been put out, taken back, and warmed over for several days.
I don't know if it was the day of the week or what .. we were there on a Monday at just after 5:30pm so you wouldn't expect that they would have food sitting around for any length of time.
It's a shame. I love that there is a vegan asian buffet .. and it seemed like the food seasoning was really great. It just tasted like I was eating really old leftovers .. and it was all very oily and left me...
