I rarely give out reviews but I hope that this detailed review could help the establishment improve their business process as I'd love to have more dimsum options in the TC:
The establishment shares the same space as Legendary Spice. There are two entrances to the restaurant: one on the left where Legendary Spice and Uni Uni bubble tea is, and the other where the Dim Sum Garden sign is at. We entered on the Dim Sum Garden side and no one greeted or sat us down for 10 minutes of waiting. Afterward, a server came up and told us that we had to queue over on the Legendary Spice side for dimsum. We walked over and was met with the same server who sat us down :) I'd suggest to have some sort of signage over on the Dim Sum Garden register so that customers know where to queue for dimsum to avoid having this confusion.
Paper plates and forks for dim sum :) This was a first for me and I was very taken aback when the server brought it out. It honestly affected my first impression so much because I've never had a dimsum experience with paper plates and forks before! Also, paper plates is just a no...this is not a picnic, it's an established restaurant.
No soy sauce or condiments (unless asked maybe multiple times). When we asked the server multiple times for soy sauce or chili oil, they had said they'll check in the kitchen/back but never came back with any. We had asked three different servers and none fulfilled our requests. I'd suggest to leave the condiments out on the table like how many other dimsum restaurants do.
Service was extremely slow. Again, we had to ask multiple servers for water,. Our order came out one by one on a robot, which defeats the purpose of having dimsum in my opinion as the portions are already small to share, and having to wait for the next item kind of ruined our appetite. We also noticed that the robot would bring out orders to empty tables, and would stand there unless someone press the button for it to return to the kitchen. Given the number of servers we had at the time we visited, it was kind of unnecessary. If the robot's there for a show, great. If it's for efficiency, please reconsider.
Food quality was very below average. We ordered seven items, some of which are standard dimsum dishes: dimsum platter (har gao, shu mai, etc.), xiaolongbao, chicken feet, egg tarts, custard buns, shrimp rice roll, chaozhou dumplings. We expected them to come out all at once but they came out one...by...one. The chicken feet came out first. It was standard, a little sweeter than other dimsum place in the Twin Cities. Next was the xiaolongbao and we had to send it back because the dough was still raw :) We never got our food back or heard back from our server about it. Then we got the egg tarts, which had a very heavy eggy aftertaste and was my least favorite even though I love egg tarts. We also had the custard bun which was standard. Last, we got the dimsum platter, which did not look anything like what was in the picture, all the type that we got were har gao, shu mai, and another type of dumpling which I do not know the name of. There were 7 different dumplings shown in the menu picture. The wrapping of the har gao were thick, which I do not prefer. Shu mai was good, and the other dumpling was not memorable (it also had thick wrapping like the har gao). We canceled the rest of our order because we had been waiting 1hr+ for all the food so far and was left disappointed one after the other with the ones we got. Additionally, everything we got were either cold or warm, which affected the texture of some of these items. I would really suggest management to look over how kitchen is handling reheating these stuff (it does not taste freshly made unfortunately, it was very telling) just so that it won't compromise the taste so much.
Overall, my first impression was not the best. I hope that this help establishment to work out some initial hiccups. I'll give it another try again in a couple of months once they've figured our...
Read moreWe were hungry. I should have looked at the reviews before sitting down.
We waited at the entrance by the sign that says, "Please wait to be seated" while various staff stood around and ignored us for long enough that I wanted to just leave. Unfortunately, we waited long enough and they finally sat us down. The staff who sat us didn't speak much English or something and just left but it was pretty obvious to me that we were supposed to make use of the tablet at the table. I was a bit taken back at the prices for the "dim sum" but as I said, we were hungry and a hangry 11 year old is not something anyone should have to experience.
We ordered, remember the 11 yr old, popcorn chicken, gyoza and har gao - the only actual dim sum. He wanted to order more but I said, "let's order more after we get through this lot". I was thankful to not have to spend more money here.
The popcorn chicken looked awesome with crispy basil leaves and what looked like a ton of salt and spice but alas, other than crispy and hot, it tastes less than what you'd expect from boiled chicken...boiled with no salt. The gyoza were also hot and tasted like overused oil. The har gao was sadly mushy but tasted mildly like har gao. I have had better har gao from my microwave oven (buy it frozen from the grocery store downstairs).
I would avoid this place.
3 "dim sum" dishes, $42 with 15% tip. We left hungry.
One saving grace for the 11 yr old was the delivery robot. Neat but pointless as staff need to follow it out and take the dishes out for you.
Did I say avoid this place? Save yourself and...
Read moreThis was our first experience here, we came to Dim Sum Garden at around 7-8pm on a weekday. There is one place to get seated, make sure to go near the boba shop, and look for the sign in the front of the seating area for, "wait here to be seated". Then you will either be seated or you can seat yourself* depending on what the server says. There is iPads to order from, and there is a dimsum and a normal resturant menu. We ordered the congee with the perserved egg, pan fried pork dumpings, soup dumplings, and egg tarts. I did not try the congee perserved egg, but I eat everything else. The pan fried pork dumpling was my absolute favorite it was a 10/10, the soup dumplings were a 8.5/10 (mine had soup and was not dry), this was my first time trying the egg tarts and I think it was a 7.5. I had a good experience, the people serving us were very polite and paitent, and the little robot bringing us our food was too cute. On our table, we had real plates, soy sauce, and chili oil. If you're planning on coming here, I heard that it's busy on the weekends, but on the weekdays after 6 it might not be busy, and a good time to come in. When you order, you get a tablet for dimsum menu, resturant menu or you can ask for both. Then you pay at the cash register at the counter when you are finished!!! This was a very nice experience for me...
