Whereas Tommy's Italian Sausages are good however per MY experience, one must have at least an half hour + time to wait for the preparation of it. Not just wait, but STAND and wait in the elements, rain, snow or sun!
This is a corner business with open windows and an outside service (no inside OR outside seating) and seldom ( due to neighboring businesses & residences) is there parking space on the street to return to one's car after placing your order to wait. I waited 45 minutes for two double Tommy's Italian Sausages & the "works". Per MY observation & personal deduction, I attribute the 'slow' service to the couple of " seasoned" (aged) no doubt loyal employees (men) with one preparing the food. My patience & appreciation level of these seasoned employees (in expectation of the receipt of great food) was heighten due to myself also being aged " seasoned" and was thankful I was able to stand 45 minutes that long (in loyalty) for receipt of just a couple of Italian Sausages and the works!
I believe Tommy's has been on this same corner for a minimum of 35+ years and obviously has had generations of loyal patrons committed to their delicious serving of one of America's food favorites- Hot Dogs and Italian Sausages.
The longevity fact alone on that same corner in light of challenging times, perhaps financial difficulties, family setbacks & pandemic concerns, etc is worth the Tommy's Italian Sausage......"Stick & Stay...
Read moreSecond stop on our trip from VA to Newark for hockey game on Saturday. Another old-school place that has been on my goal list for a long time. The place is in a very urban area, tough to find street parking, I would suggest the public parking lot at the SE corner at intersection of Elizabeth Ave. & S.Reid St. It is really just a window service place, not a restaurant of any kind. But that is not a knock, it is the vintage charm that makes it a great place to try. In addition, the Italian style hot dogs in pizza bread, are fantastic. The sandwich is really sort of stuffed pizza bread pita, as seen in photo. Order with everything, meaning onions , peppers & potatoes. The amount of potatoes included in the sandwich is over-whelming. I wouldn’t order a separate cup of potatoes. It’s just too much food!
It can be messy, take or bring plenty of napkins. Another suggestion- bring your own paper plates and plastic cutlery! The sandwich is wrapped in foil and the only utensil is a little wooden fork-spear, like the ones at Nathan’s. But the potato slices at Tommy’s are so huge, the wood fork-spear can’t handle the weight. All that said the sandwich is awesome, great grilled hot dogs and all the toppings provide nice depth of flavors.
A must visit, if your hungry, don’t go for just a snack, it’s...
Read moreTommy’s Italian hot dogs has been on my radar for years. I finally got the opportunity to go there this morning, as I had to be in the area. I checked and they open at 10:30 and as I’m not opposed to having an Italian hotdog for breakfast I got there a little after 11 and it was closed. There was somebody working inside so I knocked on the window and was told that he would open up in 10 minutes.
While waiting I noticed that the outside was pretty dirty and sketchy but I had great food at sketchy places so I waited it out. It took about 20 minutes for him to open up the window to order a combo with everything he told me he needed to do something and would take my order in 5 minutes. A few minutes later I order and notice this guy was under some sort of medication, I should have left then. Took 20 minutes more to get my sandwich. Walked around the corner to my car pop the trunk opened it up. And opened it up. First of all wasn’t even hot like it was freshly made. It was just warm. The potatoes were soggy took a few bites, regretted it threw it away. Either I got yesterdays warmed up leftovers or this guy cooked it in oil that wasn’t up to temperature. Now I’m waiting for the food poisoning to kick in. Total disappointment and possible life...
