When I was in junior high, our cafeteria served these awesome bars made with peanut butter, oats, sugar, and other ingredients. I would have one of these nearly every morning at snack break. I never found these bars again until I happened to drop in at Gordy's one day a couple of years ago. There they were, sitting in the glass case with a label that said "Lunch Lady." It turns out that Gordy, who is the same age as I am, went to the other junior high in the same district, and the cafeteria cooks shared recipes. Gordy had the same fond memories of those bars, and was able to get the recipe, somehow, and so I can re-live one of my favorite experiences (there weren't many during that traumatic early-teen period) every time I'm in the neighborhood. Gordy stayed, I moved about 50 miles away, and so whenever I pass through Encinitas, I make it a priority to include a stop at Gordy's. Not only are the Lunch Ladies wonderful, but so is every other baked good Gordy creates. My other favorites are the Plonk, the B-bar, and the Scottish, but I love everything he bakes. Recently, my wife stopped eating gluten, and when I brought home a box today of Gordy's treats, she frowned, because she couldn't eat any of them. But guess what? Gordy now makes a gluten-free Plonk! Boy, was she happy to find that out (and it tastes as good as the original, which I never would have believed). It's probably a good thing that I live so far away, because I would definitely weigh a lot more if I could stop by Gordy's more often. Encinitas, you have a true bakery treasure. Long...
Read moreNot sure what happened - we went in thinking the place looked cute and the bakery section looked great; should have been a good experience, right? We were out of town visitors and this spoiled our Encinitas experience. The owner or one of the owners served our pasty and made our iced ube latte. This was not quality espresso drink. It was terrible. It only tasted like milk NO ube flavor came through, no rich espresso either. The espresso was not made correctly. The pastries were over $5, and the drinks over $7. What a complete waste of our time, because we had to wait a while (the woman seemed confused the whole time), and a waste of our money around $30 for two drinks and two small okay pastries.
I cannot recommend this cafe based off my visit. I am sorry, but the drinks were not correctly made with the espresso machine.
It’s unacceptable to be served by a person who is incapable of making the menus “specialty sips.” She just did not know what she was doing and made us wait...
Read moreSky high prices keep this from being 5 stars. It's doesn't feel fair to pull out a 20 dollar bill and get a couple bucks and some coins back just for a coffee and little snack for breakfast. Nonetheless, the food is excellent and the occasional visit is warranted, even for the poor people like me. I guess if you're loaded then it's not much of a thought, but man, I usually just get a yogurt for 3 dollars and a muffin for a buck or off the clearance rack from whatever grocery store. To speak subjectively of the food alone, this place hit the nail straight on the head, it tastes wonderful. Just wish I could leave satiated and not broke and hungry still.
Also, the guy handed me my food and drink in a bag. I mean, maybe he was just tired or whatever and didn't think about it, but it felt like he was telling me to leave the place. I mean no worries, I can go somewhere else with the food, it just felt kind of...
