3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. This was my first time at an AYCE sushi restaurant, so it took me a little while to figure out how everything works, but I was generally pretty impressed. The food is delicious, the service is quick, and the servers are incredible; they clearly work so tremendously hard to make sure their customers have positive experiences. The restaurant was busy, but we didn’t wait long to sit down, which was wonderful. The decor is very nice—the fish bottle chandeliers are adorable. The layout is really good too.
I sampled a good variety of dishes and enjoyed pretty much all of them: The miso soup was delicious; I’d be concerned if the miso soup wasn’t delicious. It’s miso soup. The seaweed salad is tasty and perfectly salty. The texture is also just such a joy. I wish I ordered this a few times. I didn’t love some of the textures in the mussels or the takoyaki, but I think they’re both worth trying because the flavors were so good and unique. I’d probably pass on the edamame next time; I wanted it to have a little more salt. The crab rangoons were earth-shatteringly delicious. We ordered these multiple times. The tamago pieces weren’t my favorite, but that was probably a personal preference thing. I’m specific about how I like my eggs, and I think I just don’t love them chilly. The sweet potato roll also wasn’t my favorite, but I also feel like sweet potato rolls are generally pretty hit or miss with me and maybe I should instead just order something I consistently like. I think this is a me problem. The volcano roll was great, although it took some effort to get (see below). I’m not sure tempura is my favorite batter for a fried Oreo, but I’m glad I tried these ones. They tasted heaps better once I added a spoon of ice cream to each bite (chocolate and vanilla—just get both).
We were a group of 7, and we enjoyed this experience, but we did have a few issues. The biggest issue is that a number of our orders were partially canceled because the kitchen thought we were ordering more items than we would be able to eat. We did not struggle to finish what we ordered/received, and we would not have struggled had we received everything we ordered—again, there were seven of us, so we naturally ordered more than a two-person table would. Many of the items that were canceled were duplicates because two people wanted a specific roll, but because no one communicated that the kitchen had “cut us off,” we didn’t know to split the items that did arrive. We didn’t want to be wasteful and submit additional orders for the items we had t yet received, so this all meant that a few of us spent most of the meal waiting on rolls that weren’t going to come. In fact, I didn’t get to eat a full sushi roll until we asked a server about our series of missing items and clarified that we truly did want to eat those items. This was a bit disappointing and could have been clarified with a bit of communication.
We also felt that our eating habits were being monitored a bit too closely. For instance, one person at our table was eating the rice separate from the fish because the pieces kept falling apart. A server told that person that they’d be in trouble if they didn’t finish all of the rice on their plate. The menu is very clear about the repercussions of over-ordering and wasting food, so I’m sure the server was trying to be helpful; it’s also important to realize that people eat at different speeds and in different ways.
TL;DR: I like this restaurant and would definitely go back, but I’d maybe only want to do so with a table of two to...
Read moreI used to always go to the Springfield locations with my girls and we LOVED it so when this place opened, we were all so insanely excited because we all live in the Connecticut area and we loved our first experiences there and I was really excited to take my husband and my sister, but the past two times I went including today were the worst services I’ve ever received. The food is always good. I will not deny that. One of the last few times I went we were basically rushed out from almost the minute we sat down and barely spoken to. (I understood bc everyone has bad days) We were also snickered at a couple times by the wait staff. Then the next time (today) as we are leaving and talking an employee not even the waitress we had came up to me and basically told me are you sure you meant to leave that amount of a tip basically insinuating that I didn’t leave a big enough tip.
I’m always all for tipping because I understand that sometimes it is people‘s livelihood, but what I will not understand is telling me I did not tip enough, especially as somebody who also relies on tips who works in the food industry. It’s never a good look telling a customer Who may or may not come back that they didn’t leave you enough money, especially because the staff there doesn’t even usually ask me how I am.
Also the point of tipping to reward and show appreciation of service, as someone who used to waitress and still does other food service jobs I understand when a customer didn’t have the means to tip much or didn’t want to bc of the service I provided bc I was raised to be polite, respectful and kind to everyone no matter what but my family, friends and I will not be returning to...
Read moreI’m going to try to write a very accurate review Yes, it is a converted Denny’s, but it was restored pretty well Service. The front end waitresses really need to slow it down and understand what their customers are looking for. They do not give you time to ask for anything different. They don’t follow up to see how well your meals going and they’re in such a hurry, you don’t even have a chance when they drop your food to ask them for something else such as a small dish for sauce. They don’t pay attention and are always in a rush let alone listen Food expectations Represented sushi, however For those Who have not been to un authentic sushi restaurant or had real sushi, the rolls and rice is not supposed to fall apart when you pick it up with your sticks The rice in the roll should not be mushy and Imitation seafood should not be used, especially with the crab meat and salmon, which is mixed like tuna fish for a topping They have a surf and turf roll on the menu however they claim it to be Angus beef. For one I know what Angus beef should be. This is not Angus beef. A reasonable more pork and didn’t taste like steak The price of 24.99 per person I get it you, have to cut cost, but it’s not a place I would recommend for real sushi. If there was some type of service in the restaurant, I might’ve scored the three, but only average at bestbut it did not exist. When I told hemI was done three times they finally brought the bill. It shouldn’t take three times to tell him I’m done. I would put this place more in the category of a...
