We had dined at this restaurant twice before. Both times before a performance at neighboring theater Bergen PAC. The seating was comfortable and atmosphere very pleasant. The food was good the first 2 times (1st time we only ordered appetizers because the server said we wouldn't make our show in time if we ordered meals, based on how full the restaurant was).
Last Thursday we made a reservation before seeing Lea Michelle at Bergen PAC. I ordered shrimp fajitas without the tortilla wraps because I enjoy just the vegetables and shrimp. When my dish arrived, it was SWIMMING IN OIL. That completely turned me off. I was only able to eat the top layer that wasn't completely sitting in the oil. The shrimp was ok - disappointed that it served with tails on however. My husband ordered enchiladas which looked good but were pretty tasteless. If he leaves anything over, he always takes it home. He had 3 enchiladas of which he ate 2. The last one he chose not to take home because he just didn't care for it. Looking back, I should have taken my dish back. His dish wasn't awful but it just lacked flavor.
Our server was working both sides of the restaurant which of course was crazy to witness. Not once did our server replenish our water glasses. We could not get his attention to get our bill so that we can leave for the theater which fortunately, was right next door. I thought at one point I caught his eye because he acknowledged with a nod when I gestured that we need our bill. I was mistaken. He grabbed a bill for another table, handed it to the customer and proceeded to go to the other side of the restaurant to tend to those tables. We had a 5:15 pm reservation for a 7:00 pm show. We made it with only :15 to spare because it took so long to get our check.
I think for our next show, we'll choose another restaurant. Probably Zula's because we've been there many times and it's always excellent. I just thought Mexcal had been good in the past and so close to the theater. Definitely...
Read moreAfter a lovely evening seeing Herbie Hancock perform at the Bergen Performing Arts Center, I went to Mexcal for a late dinner and nightcap. I sat at the bar and ordered a veggie enchilada. I've been vegetarian since 1991, 34 years, more than half my life! I was served a chicken enchilada. I took one bite thinking it was vegetarian and then told my bartender/server that I would not eat it. One bite, no big deal (except for the chicken), I told him. It's wasn't the first time. He returned a few minutes later with my veggie enchilada. No water served, btw. When I received the check, the restaurant was still charging me for my two cocktails and enchilada. So I thought I would politely suggest to the bartend that he at least buy me one round. I managed restaurants for 11 long years and would have figured they'd have bought me a single drink at the very least. That's why we had a nightly comp check. So my bartend went to ask his manager (in itself, pretty sad) who said NO. I was icredulous, but not all that bothered (for the record, I was super nice to the bartender the entire time). He did offer to buy me a third drink, which I declined since I was driving back to NYC. I still tipped him 18% after he borderline insisted I not tip him. Nevertheless, I write this to highlight this minor YET total failure of management. I would not be writing this review if he/she'd done the right thing. I will not ever return to this place and I will remember this experience as one of the douchiest, most ignorant restaurant management style experiences I've ever had. Pretty pathetic. I urge readers to...
Read moreWe went for a relaxed bite late at night, which while the listing says its a tequilar bar it also says its a chill atmosphere... Entered to a very loud nightclub. The music was so loud no one was able to easily communicate with another let alone the waitress.
The bar hopes to be an upscale place with swanky chairs and tables but then they cheapen it with " birthday" songs that the staff is seemingly forced to drop what they are doing to go parade around the bar with a sign and glowsticks and a hat to place on the birthday person. I dont mind stuff like this, but at an 'upscale' place with a dress code im very confused at this choice.
For food we ordered nachos, empanadas, and enchiladas. Enchiladas and empanadas were okay but overpriced. The nachos were awful. The cheese is the kind of cheese you would find at a raceway track and the chips were super weak. Honestly the blandest nachoes I've ever eaten and it was 22$ not including adding any chicken or meats which will also add 4 dollars or so.
Quite disappointed in this place. It felt like it had a huge identity crisis with millennial core flower walls, Ai artwork murals, booming dj, birthday songs, and bouncers. Inflatable piñatas outside, the decor is all over the place. Only found out about the dress code after looking at the website.
I would not...
