Stopped in about a month ago to find it was a shell of the former sweet shoppe that used to be here. First thing to go was the delicious coffees and the morning hours. Those were the best in town with Toby's handmade dark chocolate syrup. The pandemic kicked the ice cream availability in the pants, but the replacement brands and flavors weren't any better than you could grab from the grocer. Gone are the handmade peanut butter cups, and fancy truffles from a candy maker in OR. The teas are gone, same with some of the other value added items. This used to be my first stop for gifts for fam + friends. I really miss the upscale ice cream, chocolates, and caramels. Bought a bag of caramels as well as an ice cream and should have just chucked the caramels in the trash. They were crystallized and runny. Couldn't even get the wrapping off of them. And $8 for half the amount you used to get for $6.95.
It was very clear that the only thing the new owners wanted was to sling subpar ice cream and make a profit. Toby used to work like crazy to keep up with this place he created with so much love and talent. Many times, I'd head down for ice cream or a shake, coffee, and caramels to help get me thru some planning sessions or meeting with other parents in our homeschool community. He'd let us stay late while he was working. It's hard work for sure, and not for the faint of heart or those just looking to make as much profit as possible.
EDITED 8/2023 To the New Owners: First, I think we can agree it isn't best business practice to scold a customer's experience when you weren't in ownership of the business yet. Nor should a business owner who didn't own the business yet accuse a customer of the former owner for passing judgement on their family. Nowhere in my review did I pass judgement on anyone's family; it was simply focused on how my experience was of the business.
Now that we can agree on all that...
Secondly, after our experience above, we did hear about new owners taking over two weeks after our visit. As you are currently running another profoundly popular and well loved establishment in town, I was very excited to hear that someone was willing to step in and save what seemed to be a dying business. You can imagine, as someone who really admired what Toby and Peggy built + was lucky enough consider Toby a friend, it was very sad to see every few months something in his business model get removed, especially when it was something popular with locals.
Thirdly, while I appreciate your offer to replace the caramels, it was not under your ownership, so I am not holding you, as the new owner, responsible personally. I do appreciate you trying to make it right though. Thank you. And just because the person making them is using Toby's recipe doesn't mean that the batches automatically turn out the same everytime. The recipe is wonderful, but there can be problems with the final product whether it be execution or the weather outside. My objection to the batch I purchased was not the cost or the amount, but simply illustrating that increased cost for fewer of an inedible product was shocking. One hopes that people making items for sale would taste test every batch. There is a certain responsibility business owners carry to ensure that their customers return.
Lastly, I wish you much success. I hope you can build this place back to one of the most popular places in town again. I wish you lines out the door in winter. I hope you do bring back Snoqualmie and milkshakes and coffee and tea. And I look forward to visiting again under new ownership and the new creative ways you undertake to run...
Read moreGreat little place! Soooo... I'd driven all the way from BL, and right when I got out of my car, the three teens called from their lunch at Sumalee's Thai, and told me they were already done. Grrrrr. So I left, thinking I wasn't going to get what I wanted, but it was cool. Got back to BL within about 20-25 minutes, and convinced the boys that we needed to go back out so I could get my peppermint milkshake! Drove all the way back out to Enumclaw, got everyone in and figured out what flavors we wanted, and then BAM! They don't do shakes anymore!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 The girl that was working (obviously a bit more experience that the guy) said that even though they don't do them, she'd have no problem making me one since there was no one in line behind us. They started weighing the ice cream, got it in the cup thing and ready to go... and then, again, BAM!!! They couldn't make it because they had no half n half!!! I said I'd be fine with milk, but they didn't have any milk either! Suuuuuper Boo! They were so super apologetic, (not their fault, they weren't trying to ruin my peppermint milkshake trip. I don't think anyway!) I ended up with a huge scoop of peppermint in a waffle cone, and it was almost close enough to make me happy lol. Bottom line, their ice cream is fantastic, their employees are fantastic, they've got cute cards, chocolates, caramels, fudge, etc... and we will FOR SURE make that 25 minute drive out every time we want ice cream! PLEASE BRING BACK...
