My Daughter & I shared a Sake Salmon Sandwich & Fries. The menu outlined on it, that the sandwich came with a side. The server also had asked us which side we wanted & rattled off all the choices quite rapidly. We asked her to repeat them, she did. We chose from her list, the truffle fries. When we received our fries, they looked & tasted like just plain fries, but they were good & we wanted to eat them hot with our sandwich, which we shared, so we didn't send them back or complain. When we received our check, we were charged for the side. We asked why we were charged for the side, which the menu & the server both had outlined, came with the sandwich. The server said Truffle fries is an upgrade. We explained to her, that not only did we not receive the Truffle fries we ordered, we also were not told when she rattled off the side choices, that any of the choices were an upgrade, with an additional accompanying charge. We mentioned to her that she never stopped during her list of sides offering & said, these are free, but these are an additional charge. She obviously wasn't happy that we asked the charge to be removed, but she removed the charge begrudgingly. Also, during our visit, a Gentleman at our table was verbally attacked by another server. She came literally charging up to him, shoved a glass with a receipt in it, scolding him loudly & saying, "when you leave, you better pay for your beer!" He gently explained that he had a tab & had simply moved from the bar to a table, when it opened & to please just add it to the tab. She refused, got louder & scolded him even more saying, "thats not how it works, you got up & left & thats not cool to not pay for your beer!" He then looked at all of us, he was obviously embarrassed & taken aback by her attack. He explained again to her, that he had not left, only moved, had a tab & then he asked her if she would like him to pay for the beer, that he had at the bar separately from his tab & tried to hand her money. She got super huffy at that point & said, "nope, you need to pay for that inside the bar", he then offered to follow her up the stairs to the bar & she said "nevermind" & then she said, she'd add it to his tab. This was an extremely, very harsh, unprofessional way to treat a patron. So that interaction combined with the interaction that my Daughter & I had, gets a no thank you, to ever returning again. The food was good but, was too high priced to have the kinds of interactions we did. If we are going to share a $20 sandwich, get upcharged for a side we were told comes with the $20 sandwich & then witness our dining partner get verbally abused, we will go elsewhere for better service & a cheaper sandwich. I have included pictures as a courtesy, in hopes that other patrons will be treated with much...
Read moreAlthough the setting and the decor are really wonderful, we had a terrible experience. On September 1st in the evening we went with a group of 12 friends to have dinner. Some got there at the agreed time, others came later. The first thing we noticed was that the air conditioning was extremely cold. We asked them if they could turn it off, they told us that they couldn't do anything about it because the thermostat is controlled by the corporate office. The waitress brought us blankets, which we used to cover the air conditioning vents. Some of us used the blankets to warm ourselves, others put on their jackets. Can you imagine a restaurant offering blankets to customers inside the restaurant because they cannot control the temperature themselves? Everyone in our party complained. One person in our party filled out a complaint card on behalf of all of us, asking them to call him. Apparently they gave him a refund of half of what he spent, but when I went in to ask for my refund, I was told by the manager on duty, Dave Walker, that they had done everything to resolve the matter (offering us blankets and refunding one person out of 12 half of the money he spent.) Altogether between the 12 of us we spent over $400. I spent $76 including tip for two dinners and two drinks. The experience was terrible, but we made the best of it, and the waitress was very accommodating. We didn't walk out and go somewhere else because there were 12 people in our group and we all hadn't seen each other for a while and have you tried to relocate 12 people on the spur of the moment, especially after some people had already received food and drinks? Easier said than done. The manager on duty said that we all should have complained and filled out complaint cards and insisted on a refund or a discount at that moment. If we had done that, our whole evening would have been ruined. As it was, the summer pasta dish was terribly bland, no flavor, the french fries with truffle oil were cold.and they were brought out when all the food got served. They ended up being left behind largely unfinished. I don't think I will be returning to this establishment again, especially because of the attitude of the manager Dave Walker, who referred me to his manager, Lisa Brandon, who I have no spoken to yet. We'll see if I update this review if she does something to...
Read moreNot my favorite McMenamins experience. I went with my 2 adult children in the middle of the day on a Saturday and there didn't seem to be anyone else waiting. We told the person who finally came to play host that we were going to have to wait 15 minutes for a table, any table. We said that we would like to sit outside but that I did not want to sit in the direct sun. 5 minutes later a couple comes in and someone else steps up to the host role and immediately seats them in the bar, which was not offered to us as an option. When we were finally seated on the patio we were taken to a table with full direct sunlight and also smoke coming from a firepit in the middle of the patio. There wasn't even a fire, it was just smoldering and unpleasant. When our server came we asked for another table because the sun and smoke were too much and the host had just sort of dropped us off without a word. Then our server leaves in the middle of our meal, fine, shift change, but as a former server is it that hard? We got to hear one of the servers being really rude and nasty to another server who was clearly new and needing some support but in earshot of guests? Really? The server we got as a replacement tried too hard and the the first one didn't bother to tell us that she was leaving and transferring us to another server. Maybe other people don't notice those things but when you have worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years you notice catty servers, sun and smoke in the faces of your guests, and a staff that clearly isn't cohesive. It makes for an unpleasant dining experience at worst and confusing with decent food at best. Also, I do not recommend the Best Day Kolsch non-alcoholic beer. So many better choices on the market. But at least they had 2 to choose from so that was really nice. The sweet potato fries are great, the sandwiches were good, and my son enjoyed the African peanut soup. I won't be rushing back though, at least not to...
