Things started to go wrong before we arrived. We booked well in time for our trip, but to our horror later read some bad reviews talking about the train noise. And of course our room -- they had booked us in "The Alfred" -- in the coach house is probably the closest room to the train. I called to ask for the room to be swapped. The nice lady said she could swap us but wasn't sure how to do it on the computer because in the past it has only worked swapping two rooms when a third room was available. I guess she needed to move a customer to a different free room somehow? Anyway, the lady said she'd figure it out and call me back in an hour or so. But she never callled back.
The next day I called again and spoke to a different lady who said swapping isn't possible. She did agree to talk to her manager and called me back a bit later to say again that swapping still isn't possible. However, she told me they offer complimentary ear plugs for guests! So already we've got two things which went wrong... not being able to swap suddenly, and not calling back.
Upon arrival we checked in and discovered that they wanted to charge our credit card for all 3 nights in advance. We came from Canada and had a special USD card which is re-loadable and asked if we could pay at the end because we need time to load it. The lady said that's no problem. Next day a new lady called to say that our credit card payment failed. I explained about the conversation the evening before and the new lady said she didn't know and that she'd talk to her manager about it... and that we shouldn't "worry". Later that day our credit card mysteriously had no money left on it. Why? They had managed to charge the card by splitting the amount into smaller amounts! We felt a bit like a cow being milked. They 'hacked' our card!
We were sad to see that the room had no coffee or tea making facilities. Apparently the main building does but is SO far away from our room that we never tried it out.
Another thing loud in the room is the A/C / heater. We turned ours off. However, it was still so hot during the night that I had to remove the covers. We couldn't figure out how to open the window when it was dark... but it is possible to open the window.
The walls in the room really are paper thin and we could hear EVERYTHING from our immediate neighbours. Even when they sighed. Somebody else in the carriage house took a shower at 5:30 AM. You hear everything... Over 3 nights we heard multiple neighbouring couples having marital relations. One neighbour talked for hours and at 10 PM we called the reception to complain because we needed to wake up at 6 AM. Reception called the neighbour and they went quiet... but decided to do noisy marital relation instead... which luckily didn't last long.
Our room came with free breakfast which everybody likes in the reviews, but breakfast only starts at 7:30 AM. Nearly every other breakfast place in Eugene opens earlier. That means we missed out on breakfast every morning of three mornings. The earliest you can check out is 7 AM and we were told to just leave the key in our room if checking out before 7 AM.
Our last morning was a Monday and two trains went through between 4 and 5 AM, and because it's inner city then the blast their horns constantly and I dare anybody to not wake up, ear plugs or no ear plugs.
All in all we have stayed in dozens of places all over the US and Europe over the last years and this is one of the worst. The thin walls are worse than the train and the train is bad enough. And the two buildings are next to one of the ugliest high rise buildings... don't know how they managed to get planning permission.
Also, the lighting in the room was either too dark or too light.
Update:
Wow... wrote 387 reviews and never received shade from an owner like this, & many of the owners accusations are simply made up and untrue.
"strong likelihood that you were attempting to not pay" Unbelievable, considering my VERY expensive car...
Read moreCame here as a retreat for myself and to see my long distance boyfriend after five long months. We require an ADA room which is usually the room received without issue. As we have stayed in the room each time other than our first time here.
I Finally get a break from life out of state and book a reservation to go and relax after the longest and hardest last few months of my life.
Dealing with selling my mothers home here in Eugene after my step father committed suicide in June to buying a home in California for us.
And then my mother having a stroke a few weeks ago and me being unable to come in for the first reservation. I failed to cancel in time with their cancellation policy. They were kind enough to honor a credit for another future stay. Not knowing the situation or asking as to why I hadn't.
So I finally check in today on the credit and expect the ADA room as discussed. However it's the room across the hall. 314 instead of 316. So from me not catching it on my email confirmation not knowing the rooms number or name. I get here and extend another night as plans changed and was fine with having to move rooms.
However my room I checked into isn't ADA and impossible for my boyfriend to get into the bathtub to use the shower as he has trouble with his legs due to his MS. And apparently the gal that made the reservation states that she didn't realize I NEEDED the ADA room but remembers talking about it. I'm moved into the room requested but was told I had to move rooms each night of my stay. This being absolutely ridiculous to me. With my being here to relax and have a calm and mellow time. I ask for a refund of the stay. I was told I would get back $46.00. Which ended up being 30 something that I didn't get...
So there's a loss of $340 some dollars. And a returning guest.
I've never in my life seen a General Manager handle a situation so rudely. He called me a liar and said he was in the room while the reservation was booked and that it was not his fault I can't look at and read a confirmation.
Then as I'm in tears and just beside myself he comes to my room but isn't professional enough to knock. He just slides an envelope under my door. So UNPROFESSIONAL! Own up and be a manager not a coward. By his appearance it looks like he's been sleeping in his office all day. Oversized and untucked shirt hanging half way down his legs and oversized, baggy and wrinkled slacks. He looks like he acts. Totally unprofessional and sloppy!
I will never recommend this property as I've been doing since I found it. Nor will I ever return. I just liked the spa tubs and the location. Nothing fancy or elegant about the place. Very masculine rooms that are super outdated and showing major ware.
Go to the Inn at the 5th and stay clear of this raggedy...
Read moreNot worth the price! There was no welcome from the young lady at the front desk when we stepped through the door, hot from dragging our suitcases from the train station. She made no mention of the beverages and fresh cookies available to guests (we found them by accident later that night). There was no mention of complimentary glass of wine in the evenings, as the website stated. There was no indication of where the breakfast would be. There was no mention of how to connect to wi-fi. There was no mention of enjoying the grounds where there were seats set out on the lawns. We discovered a much easier staircase to use by accident to get up to our room. | Room #10 (the Marjorie. #212 on the website) was sweltering hot when we stepped into it (Eugene was 95 degrees that day). The young lady said our A/C was connected to two other rooms - #10 and #11, and until one of them reached 70 degrees, the A/C in our room would not switch on. It NEVER switched on. It felt like it was at least 80 degrees in our room. The common hallway was ice cold from a vent in the ceiling there. So we kept our door propped open all night with a shoe, and the bathroom fan on as well, hoping to draw some of that cold air into the room. We slept with no blankets or sheets because it was so hot. There was thankfully a ceiling fan.| There was an empty hardware packet and directions and a screw driver left on the bathroom counter from some installation that had been done there. That doesn't seem professional| I could not find a hairdryer, and then noticed an end of something black on the wardrobe shelf, at least 6 1/2 feet above the floor. By standing on tip toe, I could just snag the end of it and drag it down.| The wide angle pictures are deceptive - the room ("with sitting area") was very small. There was no sitting area: just a desk with one chair. There was a fold up suitcase rack for one suitcase, but no where to put a second one. We put it on the floor, and stepped over it to get to the bathroom.| There were some positives: the hot breakfast was fantastic- homemade, delicious and attractively presented, and the young woman who served us was very professional and cheerful and calm. The water pressure in the shower was great. | Summation: not worth the $202 we paid for our room. We would not stay there again. Ask if there is working A/C in the room you are thinking of booking! An orientation upon arrival would be nice (what the amenities are, and where they are located; stair locations, use of outdoors). Or at least a card in the room mentioning...
