Reading some of these reviews, I'd just like to say: Metropol has had the same recipes the whole 48years of operation. So for pple to say quality has gone down hill, it's the same recipes... Yes the ciabatta can be holey, but ciabatta is a holey bread in general, it's a light, airy, holey bread. Cake slices are not getting smaller, some staff just have been slicing them too big. I get the frustration when you've had a bigger slice and than the next time its smaller, consistency is key but overall they are on the smaller side. They no longer give a free slice of cake for your bday, it is now a free mini cream puff. I have been in there and the bday person in question has a fit about this. Do you think this is the staff doings? if you want to complain about the FREE item, maybe ask for the owner:) Also, the entitlement from pple about the FREE mini cream puff, be happy you get a free anything! They literally don't have to do anything for free, and you act so ungrateful when you find out its a cream puff. The hours and staff: they only have 4 workers up front. The hours have been consistent for nearly a year or longer, if they happen to close early on a day, it's because someone called out or they're short staffed/missing someone up front. For anyone complaining about this, you may bring in a resume;) And when you google for the hours, Google hours are wrong but the actual website is right. Every time I'm in, I see they are hustling and trying their best. I'm sure they're not getting paid a ton more than minimum wage, so be patient and kind. I've seen a few awful customers to them, and the staff have delt with them with a smile. And the card reader, yes it's slow. They are still on dial up. No fault to the employees as it is the owner not making the switch to wifi. As far as, no one's bothered to fix it, how would you like the staff to 'fix it'? Day Olds are literally a day old. They don't sell anything past one day old. I've been there with lines to the door, so if tables are messy, it's probably because they didn't have time at the moment to wipe them down. And to complain about having to order up front and bus yourself, it's always been this way. It's not a restaurant or the kind of establishment that has table service. Once again, it's always been this way there. No need for a bad review about it:) I...
Read moreMetropol is the kind of business that perfectly represents the near farcical contradiction that is south Eugene. They operate in the section of town that’s filled with signs that say things like “hate has no home here,” and “honor diversity,” despite the fact that south Eugene is the least diverse, and most privileged, area of an already homogenous Northwestern town. If when you visit Metropol you aren’t seen to embody the codified accepted norms of the area, meaning largely that you’re not a silver haired wealthy boomer who arrives in a Subaru with your Northface coat, you will receive suboptimal customer service.
I’ve been to Metropol about six times, most recently with my girlfriend who is a person of color, and we were met with the cold distain and arrogance that ensured we knew we didn’t belong. While the white girls behind the counter who voted for Bernie and didn’t quite finish their liberal arts degree chatted up the aforementioned regular patron, we were met with terse one word answers and a markedly different countenance. They barked at my girlfriend when her mask slipped to the tip of her nose. (Yes, it was momentary. We both wear masks and understand they need to cover both the nostrils and mouth to be effective.) I doubt they would have done that to someone more obviously from the neighborhood. I hate everything that this business has come to represent. They are xenophobic. They are arrogant. They are privileged. And if that wasn’t enough, the chocolate cake is dry as a bone. If you’re looking for baked goods, skip this shop and visit Creswell Bakery or La...
Read moreFirst time here and I felt as if I was in Rue de Bac in Paris. Walking in and the atmosphere is so warm and inviting. They have menus to the side so everyone can get a chance to see what's on the menu without feeling as if they are in the way standing in the middle looking up at menu above the register. The pastries are to die for and the bread, the bread? Just the smell of it had me salivating. I had the breakfast sandwhich on an American roll with scrambled eggs, Tillamook cheddar cheese and dry bacon. I also had two odds and ends pastries that I believe were leftover pieces of full pastry dishes but did they taste as such? No! Oh my goodness if I didn't have to leave I would have bought the whole lot. I'm picky at most places but with how clean and courteous the people and bakery is. It's going to become an all time favorite, I don't have to worry about spending my money he4e because it's totally worth it. A bakery transporting me back to France with its atmosphere and baked goods says a lot. Anyone visiting Oregon, specifically Eugene has to try this place at least...
