Yesterday was our first time ordering at Spice N’ Steam, due to the record breaking heat wave happening in OR we wanted to avoid cooking and heating up our house any further. The wait time stated on Grubhub was about 1 hour and our food arrived right on time! The food was still hot and the food was packed sturdily. We ordered the BBQ pork fried rice, the baked BBQ pork buns, the steamed custard buns, the honey walnut shrimp, and the fried popcorn pepper chicken. Fried rice - The rice itself was a little bland (but that might just be a personal preference since I enjoy a heavily seasoned dish) but it was easily remedied by adding some soy sauce. The portion was absolutely massive and would have easily been split between 6 people. BQ baked buns - Very enjoyable! The buns were covered in a sticky, sweet honey sauce and filled with BBQ pork. My only gripe is there could’ve been more pork stuffed into the little bread balls but they were still enjoyable as they were. Steamed custard buns - I’m not sure we actually received the custard buns, the picture on Grubhub made it seem like they would have a soft custard oozing out of them, but the buns seemed to be filled with a squash or pumpkin type filling? It still tasted very good but wasn’t exactly what we were expecting. Honey walnut shrimp - This dish was slightly disappointing- but I think it was my own fault for misunderstanding what the dish was. I kind of expected a sweet white sauce, potentially coconut flavored or something, but the white sauce on the shrimp in the picture is basically just mayonnaise. I’m not a huge mayonnaise fan so it was very hard to get passed. I still ate it but I probably won’t order this again. It wasn’t bad I want to be clear but be aware if you order this dish it comes covered in slightly sweet mayo. Fried popcorn pepper chicken - Amazing. 10/10. Exactly what you expect. Huge, fat portion. You could easily split this between 2 people and have leftovers.
Most of my issues could've been resolved with clear descriptions of the food on Grubhub/ their website. I also regretted ordering the fried rice cuz my main dishes actually came with rice already- Which I didn't know due to the lack of descriptions.
Overall though, I'm happy with my...
Read moreThe menu is very impressive and the food was delicious, but the service was horrible. We were “welcomed” by a Chinese lady with food in her mouth. She didn’t say “hello” or anything, just said “Two?” and walked over to a table with menus. She gave us time to decide what we wanted to eat. She asked us if we were ready to order. My husband and I said “No, not yet. This menu is really impressive and there’s a lot to choose from.” She didn’t listen to us. She put up her notebook and pen and asked us what we wanted to eat. We thought for a second and ordered anyway. The food was amazing! Our waitress brought out the food when it was time and didn’t ask if we needed anything- just dropped the food and left. We didn’t have all of our food. If she would have asked, we would have told her that we would like the bottle of wine we ordered and the steam rice that came with the meal. She did not check up on us at all. A blonde waitress came over and offered us more water. They began putting up chairs on half the tables about forty minutes before closing. And then put up the chairs up on every unoccupied table, including the two tables next two us, about twenty minutes before closing. The blonde waitress came over when we had finished and offered us boxes. Then our waitress came back and asked if we needed boxes and I asked for the bill. We are visiting from out of town. I am a waitress at a Chinese restaurant back home and my husband is a line cook. We are very patient and easy going in restaurants, because we have first-hand experience. The blonde waitress was very nice and I appreciate her effort to make up for the Chinese lady. As a customer, I just ask the waitress to come and check up on us once during the meal to make sure everything came out right or if I need anything like more napkins. My standards are so low and our waitress just did not care. I always tip above average, but today I did not. Thank you for great food, but if I ever come back here, I am asking for the blonde waitress. She had kind eyes and a friendly smile. Thank your cooks for me. Cooks are not usually...
Read moreI am very unhappy with this place after purchasing a large order and it being 1.5 hours late. We ordered delivery directly from their website. There was a 50 minute wait on the food which is perfectly acceptable. About 15 mins after it was supposed to be delivered, we called, and they said they were very busy and their order was just about to go in the car. About 45 minutes later we called again (and hour past delivery time), and they assured us it was on the way. At the 90 minute mark after delivery time, we asked for a refund. They flat out said no and that it was on our way. We voiced our concern that the food would not even be fresh. After all, it was 90 minutes after it was supposed to be delivered, and they said it was just about to go in the car at the time it was supposed to be delivered. We ordered over $100 of food, and many items had shrimp in them. That is not within food safety guidelines, but they did not even seem apologetic. They said they were very busy, and I understand, But it is still the restaurants mistake to take on so many orders that they cannot handle, and also not give timely updates to customers It is going to be over half an hour late. We had 7 people waiting on food, three of them being young children who cannot simply be asked to wait for hours, right up until their bedtime for food. Once we got our food, it was clear it was not fresh. The veggie spring rolls were completely soggy, and the sauce was spilled all over them. The soup dumplings didn't have any soup left in them... As if it was completely absorbed because of the long time they rode in the car. The bean curd was good. I'm sure all of it would have been good if it was fresh. The egg fried rice was totally cold. If they would have been honest that they were SO busy, we would have cancelled and tried another time. Instead, they just lied and pretended our food was almost here for 90 minutes, when we were no more than 10 mins away. We will...
