Art of War - MMA and Fitness is a fantastic place. I trained there from 2016 to 2021 and I cannot say enough good things about it. I came in as a scrawny nerdy guy with no prior experience in athletic sports or anything like that. I was quickly welcomed in by the gracious staff and they immediately felt at home. Coach Jason and the rest of the instructor cadre will meet you where you are at. In the five years that I trained there I was able to get in the best physical shape of my life, compete in Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts, and eventually teach others in Jiu Jitsu.
It as always a pain to try to force myself to go to a traditional gym to lift weights or run on a treadmill. I never felt like I was working out when I was at Art of War - MMA and Fitness because I was too busy having fun and learning how to defend myself at the same time. The facility is kept in pristine condition and cleaned regularly. There are students who are young, old, men, women, and everything in between. If you do not have a desire to compete, no one will ever pressure you to do so. If you choose to compete, you will be as prepared as you possibly can be.
The only reason why I left is because I relocated out of state. If I was still in Oregon, I would commute from wherever I was in order to continue to train at Art of War - MMA and Fitness. That is how much I loved this place. They offer Fitness, Boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, MMA, and advanced classes. There are no "membership contracts", initiation fees, gym improvement fees, required uniforms, or any other hidden fees to nickel and dime you like other gyms in the area. The tuition is the tuition and that's it. If you get injured, need to take a break, need to leave town, or life happens, you can pause your membership with no questions asked. I seriously can't recommend this place enough. If you are interested in trying martial arts, are coming to the area with prior experience, or just want to casually train, Art of War - MMA and Fitness is the place to be. Stop waiting and...
Read moreI joined here around a month ago and I have been very satiafied with this martial art school. The place itself is pretty decent. They have mitts and pads and bags and some workout equipments. A decent main training space and a smaller room too. As a beginner, I am glad to see plenty of class choices fitting my level. I mainly go to beginner level muay thai and boxing classes. There are also jiu jitsu, fitness, mma and wrestling classes, also the advanced versions of each. They also offer private lessons. The instructors are mostly very good. My favorite coach is Chris. He is a GREAT coach. He is very friendly, supportive, patient and professional. I really appreciate his attention to details. I have also been taking private lessons with him and I've learned a lot during these sessions. Highly recommended! The peer students are mostly also friendly and supportive. Most are men, but there are also some ladies training, so it's nice to see a mixture of gender (less intimidating for my wife). They have a good vibe there. They have detailed hygene protocals, which is very important. The price is a bit high IMO, but I feel like it's totally worth it! The price is different depending on how many lessons you take each week (private lessons don't count toward it and are just paid each time on their own). By the time I signed up, there were a number of ways to get a discount (e.g. 6 month commitment, prepayment). Ask head coach Jason for more details. To sign up, contact Jason for a trial lesson first. Several minor catches: the place nearby has some homeless ppl so it's not the nicest (it's downtown Eugene afterall). Parking will mainly be street parking nearby. In short: Great martial art school! Highly recommended! Also again I highly recommend coach Chris! Go try...
Read moreNEW LOCATION UPDATE: The gym has moved to 164 W Broadway, and is absolutely thriving. Everything in the old review still holds. Same awesome coaches, same core fight teams, all better than ever. However the new location has some significant upgrades worth mentioning:
Same great gym, fantastic new space.
OLD REVIEW: I've trained at Art of War for about five years now, and I am now in the best shape of my life. Jason has a lifetime of knowledge and experience with all aspects of grappling, striking and fitness, and he takes a scientific and practical approach to training. The gym itself is clean and well equipped. The atmosphere is very welcoming for all levels. There are coaches and classes for each discipline so you can specialize as much as you want, and there is no shortage of excellent training partners due to the active and successful MMA and Muay Thai fight teams. Whether you want to improve your fight game or just get insanely fit, you should definitely check...
