We went to the New Ewing Diner today for lunch. Let me begin by saying the host (gentleman with glasses and wearing headphones) was very welcoming and pleasant. I assume he's possibly a manager? Our waitress was wonderful. Very professional, attentive and did a wonderful job. (we ended up leaving her a 22%-23% tip). Sadly, the pleasantries end there.
The New Ewing Dinner is exactly that, a diner (although it's no longer "new" so the name is a bit silly). It's not a high end restaurant which is fine but their menu prices are bizarre!
My wife and I frequent all types of restaurants throughout the area, some of which are "high end" restaurants where you expect to pay more than the average eatery. Going to your local diner though, one shouldn't expect the prices that this place has.
Just to give you an idea, today's (5/4/25) daily special board featured prime rib for $32. I'm sure it came with soup/salad and a side but 32 bucks for prime rib from a diner is a bit high. While looking at the menu, I noticed a $5 charge for plate sharing. Whatever! My wife and I never share a meal anyway so that didn't effect us but I did notice that they charge a "5% surcharge" for to-go orders and the daily special sheet stated that there is a 6% charge for to-go specials. C'mon, I get it that restaurants have to purchase to-go containers but that's crazy. In fact, it might have been the first time I have ever seen that.
I ended up settling on a bacon cheeseburger and my wife ordered a wrap. I can't remember what the wrap cost but I noticed on the menu the price of a bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and onion was close to $20 ($18.99 if I'm not mistaken). Sure it came with a cup of mediocre soup, extremely mediocre fries and side of cole slaw that I didn't touch. While the burger didn't taste bad, this wasn't a gourmet burger and it was not thick at all. $20 for a bacon cheeseburger, fries and coleslaw is insane! To compare, a local pizza place in Ewing offers the a very similar burger and fries for $7.99.
Everyone is effected by the high cost of goods but most restaurants don't nickel and dime their customers in such a way. For us, there are much better quality restaurants in Ewing where someone wouldn't mind paying these prices. Remember, this is a diner not a bistro or a fine dining establishment! Maybe having more realistic prices would draw more customers and a loyal following as Mastoris and Town & Country...

I visited the restaurant last Friday night with my mom and sister. From start to finish, the experience was enjoyable and well-paced. We were seated immediately upon arrival, and our waitress, Ashley, was amazing—friendly, attentive, and checked in with us regularly. She made sure we had everything we needed and never made us feel rushed, especially while we were enjoying our soup and salad. The timing of each course was perfect.
My mom and I both ordered the Stuffed Salmon dinner special, priced at $27.99. The salmon was stuffed with flavorful crab meat and served hot, fresh, and perfectly cooked—it was truly the highlight of the meal. The dinner special included two sides, soup, salad, and dessert, offering great value for the price.
For my sides, I chose creamed spinach and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. While I personally didn’t care much for either, We were also served warm dinner rolls, which added a nice touch to the meal.
The soup of the day was chicken pasta, and it was very comforting. The side salad was fresh, crisp, and served at the ideal temperature. Everything was well-portioned and presented nicely.
My younger sister ordered the Big Bird from the kids' menu, which came with ice cream. She received crayons and a coloring sheet, and her meal was brought out first—great for keeping her engaged and happy while we waited for ours. One suggestion for improvement: I believe the menu could use an update, as it has remained the same since I was a child. A refresh would keep things interesting for returning guests.
The restaurant offers specials every day of the week, including weekends. These include dinner specials, early bird specials, and lunch specials. Dinner specials typically come with soup, salad, and dessert, while early bird specials include either soup or salad and dessert. It's a good idea to review the menu closely to understand what’s included with...
Read moreI visit Ewing Diner regularly. This past Saturday morning on May 20, 2017, the diner was full and I was seated near the opened door. It was a cool morning and a cold draft was coming through the opened door that is usually closed. I asked my waitress if the door could be closed because of the cold draft coming in. I couldn't take off my coat beacause my arms were cold. I ordered hot tea and it went cool quickly because the door was still opened. I put my food order in and waited a long time before my meal came. The draft coming through continued to bother me so I reached out to the manager, a man in blue button up shirt and black slacks. The manager told me no that he couldn't closed the door because the glass door chips when the move it. He said it was nothing he could do and that he was sorry.
My food finally arrives and a quickly got cold due to cold air coming in my direction. My waitress said they couldn't closed the door because the manager wants air circulating in the diner; this was totally the opposite of what the manager originally told me. The waitress offered me a slice of cheesecake for free. I just wanted to eat my breakfast hot. My food got cold quickly, so I had it boxed up. I didn't get to enjoy my meal so I asked for a discount off of my meal. The manager told me no, told me to leave my food and not pay or if I take the food and not pay the bill, he will called the cops on me. I told him I'm going to pay bill, it just needed to be discounted sue to the circumstance I had to endure.
I was embarrassed and appalled at the manager's behavior and attitude toward the situation. I was even more surprised with how the manager didn't make sure I was a satisfied customer and guaranteed my return to visit Ewing Diner again.
I will not dine at Ewing...
