1 review 1.0 star rating 11/20/2016 Took my family there to celebrate our daughter's first concert. The service was so- so till the meals arrived. Two of the meals arrived and we had to wait 10 minutes for the third and asked what happened. We were given a lame excuse by the bartender about the help in the kitchen not knowing how to get the food out properly and "that at any good Chinese restaurant the food does not always come out the same time." NEVER HAD THAT PROBLEM WITH KIRAKU or any other Chinese restaurant in Faifield - all main dishes showed up at the same time. Fine - it happens. Then we tasted the food - My wife's lamb dish was full of grease and the meat was questionable. My Beef Hot Sour Pot had no flavor and I had ordered it spicy (3 peppers on the menu). The sauce tasted like dishwater with no flavor and the beef looked like it had been soaked in water with no flavor. No kick at all. But there was sliced Chinese peppers placed on top of the dish. Was that to add the kick? My daughters dish which we waited for - Mongolian Beef was no better. The beef had been deep fried and had the texture of bacon - crisp/crunchy. We were told by someone who ran the front of the restaurant that the Szechuan Mongolian Beef is served that way (Authenic style) - meat crispy and fried. My daughter used her phone to check the internet about the recipe and nothing on any site - even Chinese sites served the dish that way.
Also, the dish my daughter had ordered is one of her favorites which she orders quite often even in Chinatown NYC and we have never gotten crispy fried beef with onions instead of scallions served with no sauce.
There is too much on the menu including almost four pages of appetizers - no wonder the kitchen can not make things right.
My advice is to find a Szechuan restaurant that knows what they are doing and not go to Shu of Fairfield, CT. We miss Kiraku and laughed thru the door - never to return.
PS - The bartender mentioned if we did not like the food - do not come back....
Read moreThey tried to hustle me w sushi! I ordered TORO which is pink and I got regular red tuna instead I DID complain and got half off on the fake toro order- it's unfortunate bc this was one of my favorite places- I'll never come back. I am not big on complaining- Basically I can tolerate Almost anything messed up w my order but not highway robbery! When I specifically ask if there is sashimi TORO being served bc it's at Market/Price And the server tells me YES we have it/ and it's $16.00 for 3 pieces. I expect what I order- He comes w 3 minuscule pieces of regular red tuna. Besides being robbed for the TYPE of fish- I also got robbed for the amount I got. Those 3 tiny pieces of red tuna they were pretending was toro Originally go for about 4$ They tried to charge me 16$ After my I brought it to his attention I ended up paying 8$- Extremely Disappointed bc I was a regular there- and being the huge sushi lover that I've been for 20 yrs it was a HUGE insult ! 😡 Sushi is my favorite food/ it makes me happy/ and when something comes in between that I'm going to...
Read moreThis is no longer Kiraku (as of 8/19/16): it's Shu, the sister restaurant to Shu up in Hartford, CT. It has new owners and serves excellent, fresh, authentic Szechuanese food. The service is extremely friendly and helpful, and the food I've had so far has been terrific: done of it spicy enough to leave me sweating, but all so complex in flavor. Highlights have been the Salt and Pepper shrimp, the 7-flavor wontons with a spicy peanut sauce, the Chengdu-style dumplings, and the beef tendon in chili oil. I will probably be returning at least once a week for awhile to get through more of the menu - so excited to have authentic Szechuan food...
