This local restaurant is an amazing place. My fiance and I have tried sushi places everywhere from Norfolk to DC and everywhere in between. But this is the only place that we have returned to more than twice. The selection is awesome, basically, anything that you can think of. The ingredients are always fresh, the rolls are always professionally presented and we have yet to be there on a day where they "just didn't have it." Sushi recommendations: The Sushi-Zen roll and the Super Crunchy roll.

Even though the sushi is why we go, it is hardly the only reason we have stayed. The appetizers are incredible as well. I've had every miso soup and salad combination and even tried to make it myself, but theirs tops them. The edemame is fresh and always hot. And for dessert, you have to try their ice creams. The lavender ice cream is mind blowing.

The service is always top notch, very friendly and quick to offer suggestions. Even though it is a smaller restaurant, we have not had a problem with seating though, after this place is discovered by the masses it probably will be. Until then, we will enjoy the quaint neighborhood atmosphere and...

The service was horrible. Waited 15 minutes by the door to be seen by the waitress. It took another 20 minutes to receive our order, my to go food was wrong when I get home to get my salmon Bento I saw a chicken bento called the Brian manager isn’t helping either. I came in sunday with friend and had to wait 15 mins to get a menu. Meanwhile another family came in and only had to wait 5 mins, AND a menu was offered to two , The only difference between the other customers and myself is that I was in shabby pants and latino. which is funny because money is money and race shouldn’t matter. It’s also ironic because most of the servers are people of color but I guess internalized racism is a thing. Each time the wait staff forgets a component of the order, the food comes after an egregiously long period of time, my friend get charge for a soup that she never get it they forgot to bring during our hour long visit, our water wasn't filled one time. When we asked for refills they...

Ordered a spicy tuna roll and a California roll online. The spicy tuna was not great. Just chopped up tuna with a spicy sauce that tasted more reminiscent of like Korean gochujang on fried squid and nothing else like avocado or cucumber or sesame seeds (I guess that’s my fault for not looking at photos online first). It was also really small for the price. The California roll was better but not much imitation crab especially for the price. The sushi rice itself was good but the fillings need work. Also said it would be a 40 minute wait which seemed really long but figure it was busy. Went inside to pickup after about 30 minutes even though the tracking still said the 40 minute time. There were several bags of to go orders just sitting there. So don’t trust the tracker since I’m not sure they actually update it when the order is ready and ideally sushi shouldn’t be...

Popped in for late lunch. Right away noticed how clean & fresh everything is, from the front to the server area, and even the restroom(s). Since I was cutting it close before afternoon closing (2:30), I had called ahead and my order was ready for dine-in. Simple for me today: lunch special, 3 rolls (California, tuna & salmon). Simple turned out to be SPECIAL--because everything was so delicious, so perfect in it's own little way. The fish itself was very fresh and just the right temperature. But it doesn't end there. My Japan-born & raised wife always says that no matter how good the fish is, if the rice isn't right... And that's so true here: each bite so delicious, full of flavor & texture❣ And not to be overlooked: the miso soup--subtle, wonderful, fulfilling. My tummy is very happy today. I'll be back!

It had been a long time since we last ate at Sushi Zen. We always enjoyed sitting at the bar and interacting with the sushi chef. But that is no longer an option. We started with the fried panko oysters and the seaweed salad which we both enjoyed. We ordered more sushi than we really needed but when you’re hungry…. The service was great and the starters amazing but the actual nigiri sushi and the rolls ordered were a bit of a let down compared to the presentation. The yellow tail was good as was the eel. However the salmon belly was a bit mushy as was the urchin that was way too runny and without form. On top of that the fatty tuna was too chewy….almost rubbery for its market price. The rolls were OK at best. Ultimately the quality seems to have suffered some since our last visit several years ago.

I tasted Sushi everywhere in the world including Japan during my time in the military. If you are looking for number #1 sushi place in DMV, stop searching and eat here today! I will never go to another sushi place in the dmv again! I have tried all the fancy sushi restaurants in the dmv and it doesn’t compare to sushi-zen. Many Sushi shops in America are owned by Chinese or Korean owners, this is the only and rarest sushi shop that is own by a Japanese owner with traditional Japanese heritage. The food and value offered here is such a gem, I recorded a video of the food I ate on instagram as well :)
