I decided to finally try this place considering I had an itch for fish, some tea and rice. I'll preface this with the fact that sushi means sour rice, which is what makes it different than our traditional long white grain. It's a shorter grain with the proper ratio of vinegar, sugar, salt. Bad rice will destroy the experience that makes "sushi" so wonderful. I have been making sushi rice for a long time so now I will continue.
I decided to go a make your own bowl and burrito, fried dumplings, pork meatballs and an Okinawa Milk Tea.
Burrito (Seaweed Paper, Sushi Rice, Avocado, Cucumber, Edamame, Green Onions, Masago, Shrimp Tempura, 1/2 Tuna, Spicy Mayo, Dried Nori, Ginger, Soy Sauce, Sesame Seeds, Tempura Crunch) 2/10 - They made it into a bowl was the first mistake. The second was the amount of spicy mayo destroyed any crispiness the shrimp would have had. The rice was appalling. It was more like undercooked white rice vs sushi rice. No flavor either. Tuna and toppings were "fine".
Poke Bowl (same as above but with all 10 toppings available and some eel sauce too) 3/10- everything was still overly sauced. Same issue with the rice. The crab and seaweed salad were a nice edition of it wasn't completely drowned by the sauce.
Meatballs 5/10 Had decent springiness to them like normal chicken Tsukune but the sauce didn't work for me. I do think this was more flavor preference vs them being "bad". I'd suggest trying them yourself and making your own decision.
Dumplings 7/10 Crunchy and what one would expect a fried app. Better than most frozen American grocery brands. Again the sauce didn't work for me. Luckily they were good enough to eat without.
Tea 9/10 refreshing, sweet and exactly what one would expect. I'd be willing to try their other drinks for sure.
Final Verdict 4/10
The rice and the amount of sauce really ruined the experience sadly. Also getting a 2nd bowl vs burrito as I ordered plus the lack of ginger which I also requested didn't help. If I were to try them again, I'd maybe just try the ingredients with greens and make my own sushi rice honestly. I'd definitely ask for sauce on the side. I'd for sure try another tea. Maybe I caught them on an off day? If I do decide to order again, I will update my review accordingly .

Read moreSushi Burrito sounds a lot better than it is, and the Sushi Burrito Cafe itself LOOKS better than it is.. sorry, but it’s a 2-1 overthrow here, and the odds aren’t looking great.
But, it’s still not bad by any standards. I mean, I still gave them 4 stars as you can see and I wouldn’t just do that for no reason. Only, I’ve had sushi burritos at other places before, and they are way better than the one I tried here. Fargo just struggles with its sushi, and what else could you expect from a land locked frozen tundra with few people?
I just love the cafe itself- it’s dreamy, it’s sparkly, it’s relaxing and it’s aesthetic. Superb for sitting down to eat and enjoy the space. I got one of the spicy burritos, and MAN was it spicy. Hot dang! I can take a lot of spice and I love spice, but this was too much to be honest. And I felt that the seaweed wrap was too sticky and the texture just wasn’t quite right. But you also have the option of getting a regular tortilla wrap if you don’t want seaweed. Thought it’s a nice option, it just seemed weird to me.
We also got boba, because of course a sushi burrito joint would serve bubble tea too! I really enjoyed that- but the boba was a tad too soft, it was almost just melt in your mouth, and anyone who’s had boba a lot knows it should be more chewy and a bit solid. It’s a delicate balance. But overall I’d definitely come back and 100% enjoy it! Just maybe getting something slightly...
Read moreAs a white person myself, I can safely say that there are some things white people shouldn't de-culterize... You can definitely tell the only official Itamae training was received from You-Tube University. I'm not saying their food is bad, but rather sloppy, not great and definitely not worth $12 a roll on average. Even Hornbachers offers better rolls for cheaper. I had the Spicy roll and Shrimp tempura roll burritos. The spicy roll I'd have to rate at a 7/10, but the shrimp Tempura was only a 4/10, and if I'm being honest I have really low standards for food so that's really saying something. I would love to come back here again as the concept of their food is great, but it's not gonna be for awhile as I need time to forget how "not great"...
