This was our first very anticipated visit to the French Market. Staff was Friendly. The coffee was great. The crepes were amazing. The omelets were pretty good as well. You can see the hard work the owners have put into this business. The atmosphere is welcoming and the decor is beautiful.
The only issue we encountered was how we were treated by other fellow customers. We arrived about 5 mins before they got slammed so we were lucky enough to get good seating. We had 10 people in our party including an infant and 5 children. Before I could even sit down and eat after making sure everyone else in our party had their food and was taken care of, a lady came up and asked if we were leaving. We had just received our food so it was pretty clear we were not leaving.
About 5-10 minutes later a small group of people walked over and stared at as while we were eating and were whispering to one another while looking at us giving us mean looks. A couple of us were almost done eating but was still drinking coffee. Then about 2 mins later another lady came over to us and asked if we were leaving again. She asked me this as I was clearing off one of our tables to free it up for someone else. We couldn't even enjoy our food and this ruined the overall experience for us.
You could just feel the sense of entitlement from others as if those sitting should scarf down our food and get of "their" way. It was a Sunday around noon so I'm guessing this was the church crowd. Even though we were rushed we still made it a point to be considerate of others and ate in a timely manner. We cleared off a table before we were all ready to leave. Not everyone was even finished eating. To top it off the people that sat down as we cleared off a table didn't say a word to us.
To potential customers: Please be patient in waiting for seating. It is very limited here. I would suggest going somewhere else if you are in that big of a hurry. Remember that a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Even a smile or a simple thank you can brighten someone's day.
When you walk into a room what you carry whether a good or negative attitude can change the atmosphere and you can bet it will rub off on others. Let's bring back that good ol' southern hospitality and be mindful of how we treat one another. This is what makes the south different.
To the owners: You have obviously put so much work into your business. I appreciate that! We will most definitely return despite our experience from other customers. We live in Sevierville so we aren't very farđ. The food and staff was still great.
If this is a reoccurring issue may I suggest switching to a more traditional seating so that when seating is full customers are placed on a waiting list instead of walking around asking those who are still eating if they are leaving. That way others don't feel so rushed and overall have a much...
Read moreThis restaurant has been the only negative experience that we have had in our year of living in Knoxville. We walked into the restaurant on a Monday at around 12:30pm. There were 3-4 tables occupied by other guests, but by no means was the restaurant busy.
As we walked in, since it was our first visit, we were unsure if we needed to wait to be seated or if we could seat ourselves. There were 3 employees staring directly at us from in front of the counter that said nothing, I mean absolutely nothing. There was no greeting, no "have you been here before, even a quick "you order at the counter". Nope, they just stood there staring at us for the amount of time it took for us to figure out for ourselves that we needed to order at the counter and then be seated.
We walked over to the counter, and one of the individuals (who mind you was one of the employees staring at us to figure out how the process works), a male possibly early 20's, told us to hold on while he did something else.
As he sauntered back to the counter to take our order, there again was no greeting, no warm smile, just a "What can I get ya?" Yes it would be too hard to be friendly to patrons of the restaurant you work at. We took a minute to look at the menu and order 2 turkey, bacon avocado crepes and one cinnamon sugar crepe. I was so put off by the entire experience (and yes I should have walked out well before this) that I did not even want to order a drink.
I took my infant daughter over to get a seat and she had inadvertently removed my mask, and I was rudely told "you can remove your mask when you get to the table." Yeah I realize that and there is nothing you can do to stop a little one from removing your mask.
My mom paid at the counter and told me later that the employee did not state and total and she thought she had heard him say "you pay over there." When she started to walk away he curtly told her "You need to pay." She finished the transaction and then asked where she could get the coffee she ordered, he pointed to the end of the counter and walked away.
The crepes were okay, except for one of the crepes was incorrect (the waitress delivered a lemon crepe instead of a cinnamon sugar) and the whole experience was tainted by the rude, unprofessional staff that worked that day.
I say this with all honesty, we have been in Knoxville for almost a year and every place (restaurant, store, etc.) has had friendly employees, good service, and a smile to welcome you back. This place misses the mark for Knoxville and I would not be surprised that if this trend continues that the restaurant will eventually close.
Severely...
Read moreFirst of all, I have to say the crepes are delicious. But the service we received today was awful. My friends and I arrived at 9:30 to set up a table with a few gifts and macarons for a friend who is expecting a baby. We love the food & atmosphere of this restaurant so we thought itâd be a great place to celebrate. There were 8 of us. We all ordered crepes/omelets and coffees/drinks. Our friend has been wanting to paint macarons so we set up small plates with food coloring to paint while we ate, chatted, and opened gifts. A female employee approached us upon arriving and asked what we were doing. We told her that itâs just food coloring and it wouldnât harm the very dark tables. We didnât hear anything else until after we finished eating 30 min later. She walked up and told us we had to leave because the owner called and said we could not be doing this here(assuming they meant the macarons). I was shocked. We were not loud, we were not messy, and we didnât stay a very long time. We even tipped well! I looked around the restaurant to make sure we werenât taking up the tables. There were at least 5 empty tables just inside with more outside. I wish they wouldâve told us when we first arrived so our expecting friend didnât have to feel so bad. I just hate that her special day was ruined by someone who couldâve been more kind. We were obviously celebrating and Iâve never ever been asked to leave anywhere let alone for something so trivial. My daughter loves this place so Iâm sure weâll be back but definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Itâs just sad cause that didnât have to happen. Updated: Iâm pretty shocked by the response from the owner which were filled with multiple lies. We were not there at 12. It was 9:30-10:15. We did not bring any food with us besides 2-3 macarons each. We didnât paint pictures we painted tiny little macarons while we talked and caught up. We did not use water colors. We used food coloring. How else could we eat it? Honestly I think that mustâve been the biggest issue. If we were just talking at the table then I guess it wouldnât have been a problem. The reason we brought our own macarons is because the ones they sell are gross. Iâve been to so many restaurants that have absolutely no problem with you bringing in cake or desserts for a special occasion. Those places even ask if we want plates & forks! I didnât think it would have been such a big deal. Idk if the food is worth the...
