Update: 10.27 We went back to try different dishes. I tried the Voodoo Sandwich, and boy, was it hot. If you like spicy, this sandwich is for you. It's topped with Frito chips, jalapeños, and chopped onions. The portion was pretty good-sized. My only complaint is that I wish it came with lettuce for something fresh to balance the fried shrimp and spicy sauce. Overall, it was a good sandwich. Next time, I'll request lettuce and am willing to pay extra for it.
The next dish was the Blackened Catfish. It was delicious. The plating seemed plain, but the flavor was there. I'll request a couple of slices of tomatoes on the side next time to balance the saltiness of the seasoning used on the catfish. I also tried the special, which was the Hot Chick Sandwich topped with pickles and coleslaw. Once again, the food did not disappoint. They should offer the coleslaw as one of their side dishes as it was very tasty.
We also went there for breakfast. My husband had the migas, and he really enjoyed it. He said it was cooked perfectly and the right way. He loves good migas and it looks like we don't have to drive far for one. I had the Huevos Rancheros, and it did not disappoint. It came with two sides. There was plenty of food—enough for two people. The salsa on the dish was delicious, the egg was cooked perfectly, and the ham wasn't dried out like most breakfast places we've been to.
On a different visit, my husband ordered the Belgian waffles with bananas on top and a side of bacon (two slices). The only thing I noticed is that the bacon was too thin. If it were a bit thicker, it would've been perfect. The waffles were thick and fluffy, just how he liked them."
Update: As I mentioned in my original review, we went back and tried other dishes on the menu, and I was not disappointed. The Gyro was packed with meats and was huge, bursting with flavors. The wings tasted fresh, not frozen, and were on point. The Godfather Philly sandwich was great, filled with Philly steak, pepperoni, chopped bell pepper, mushrooms, and onions with cheese. It was a bit salty but still delicious. I couldn’t finish it all because it was too big. We also tried the fried fish, and it didn't disappoint. It's was fresh, light, and crispy. We will definitely be going back, and I look forward to trying more dishes.
We ordered the Philly cheesesteak with sweet potato fries, a Philly burger, and banana pudding. Both dishes were delicious. The patties were freshly ground on the same day, and you could taste the difference between frozen and fresh ingredients. The Philly cheesesteak was loaded with meat. The only thing I wished for was a bit more onions and provolone cheese. Both fries were crispy and fresh. The banana pudding was also homemade by the owner’s wife. We’ll definitely be returning to try everything on the...
Read moreMy husband wanted to try this place, so we went. My husband had initially taken my toddler in with him, but my toddler was throwing a fit, so we brought him back to the car. Well my son had to use the restroom, so we went in. There was a little saddle there that he wanted to show me. Idk if there was a sign, but if there were I must’ve missed it, so that would be on me. The person at the register was telling my husband that he can’t go on it. That was fine bc he was looking at it. The gentleman had said it again and I was telling my husband, that our son was just looking at it. We are Mexican America, and I felt so uncomfortable. If you are going to have a seat that is not supposed to sat on, that put a sign that says “This is a piece of history. Please don’t sit on me” or if you did make a sign, make it bigger for people to see. Bc if I didn’t want someone touching my stuff, I would put a sign just giving people of heads up.
UPDATE: This is how the owner responds to any criticism. Go at your risk. Y’all have been warned. And when my husband first went in with my son, the person had told him that the saddle was “really old” so do with that information as you will. And if your concern is really about safety, I would suggest a caution sign or a “do not touch” sign. Have the day...
Read moreThey got a cheesesteak so good, it might have a birth certificate from South Philly.
If Pat and Harry Olivieri were alive today, they’d shed a tear of joy (and maybe a little whiz) over the masterpiece that Philly Dave’s serves up. One bite into my cheesesteak, and I swear I heard the distant sound of honking cabs, smelled the Schuylkill, and felt the overwhelming urge to yell “Yo!” at strangers. For a brief, beautiful moment, I was in South Philly.
Italy itself has given its stamp of approval—somewhere in Naples, a nonna just did the sign of the cross and whispered, “Perfetto.”
But let’s be real: the real reason I keep coming back isn’t just the cheesesteak. It’s the old guy at the front counter. His sense of humor is sharper than provolone and saltier than the fries. He could probably run for mayor, but then who would make me question my life choices while handing me my sandwich?
Philly Dave’s isn’t just a restaurant—it’s an experience. And it’s one I’ll keep reliving, one greasy, glorious bite at a time. Hook me up with a little more fries next...
