I was in the drive thru Saturday between 5-6 pm on 09/28/19 sitting in line for over 35 minutes when the lady In front of me asked me to back out so she could leave. She explained she had been sitting in line for over 30 minutes herself for just drinks. I backed out and let her leave, then the guy now in front of me said the same thing and his girlfriend had gone inside to see what the problem was because there is no one at the drive thru window at all. I decided to go inside to check it out when he told me 3 employees were sitting outside on a break. I entered and asked to speak to the manager and I had to wait a good five minutes before he came to speak to me. He was helping at grill but still was not serving the drive thru. I have worked in many fast food restaurants and I know you are to serve the drive thru before the inside and keep it moving. He said he is understaffed as everyone has worked their allotted 40 hours. I told him he needs to hire more staff. He told me he was backed up at the grill as they only have one person working it. There were only 2 tables with people waiting for food inside and 2 people at the register had been there even before I entered the establishment. I was inside Still waiting for the manager as I watched 2 groups of people walked out because they could not even order. So that means 2 large groups left inside without ordering and 2 cars that I know of left without getting the food they did order in the drive through. It was supper time and they should have been well staffed. There were plenty of staff but not on the grill. Manager said he could not ask grill person to fix food for drive and Inside area for low money they get paid. I saw at least one bus boy or dish washer, manager, register person and 2-3 waitresses. Each should be crossed trained and be able to jump in and help get the customers food out quickly, especially in the drive through. At Dairy Queen my son could cook/grill, clean dining room, take customer orders, make ice cream treats or run register etc at any given moment. The Manager asked me if I had ever worked in fast food or if I ever had been to what a burger at 3 am and he was sure I had to wait that long there. I assured him I was no idiot and I had most certainly worked in many fast food restaurants before as a teen and that I was never allowed to have the drive thru backed up or let a customer wait for over 35 minutes for food. I also explained to him I do not go to what a burger at 3 am and if I did, I would be complaining if it took 35 minutes to get my food in the drive thru there too. I asked for the managers phone number and idk if it was the correct number or not bc I called and left a message and no one has called me back about this situation. I did tell the manager my husbands Shake should not be melted and of course it was. He did give us a 40% discount but that did not make up for the hour that was wasted there in the drive thru sitting waiting to order, then waiting in line, then having to go inside, letting people pull out of drive thru bc not getting waited on etc all to get 2 drinks and a shake. I was not impressed and I have never been treated this way there before and I would not recommend you go there unless you have time on your hands to waste. I hope the owner or manager can cross train the employee so it will be a more pleasant dining experience...
Read moreAfter we were seated, we received our drinks, but our server disappeared for half an hour. When our food didn't come, I found her and informed her that we did have a rehearsal to get to. She said that there was a problem with the my taco salad; they were out of one of the ingredients. I replied, "Fine, just get me any hamburger. Is that quickest?" She said yes. However, it took almost an hour total to get my order and my son's grilled cheese. Then the bill never came. I spoke with the manager about the poor service and to her credit she gave us a free meal. However, this kind of hour-long wait has happened before at the same location and is terribly frustrating. You never know what kind of service Steak and Shake will deliver.
My second-grade son says: We both get to choose a restaurant each week. Fortunately, I always beg my mom to go to Steak and Shake. When I got there, I just sat down and ordered my food and drink. I got the drink, but I was getting bored because we had like a 55 minute wait. Once my mom got out of our seat to inform the waitress we had to go. The bad news is that they were out of taco salad ingredients. I kept on waiting and waiting and I was starting to say to my mom, "I'm going to take a rest until my food comes." But it was too loud and I couldn't just close my eyes. A kid and his parents who came after us got their food and we didn't. And then an old man who came before us finished his food and then left. I was wondering what was going on. I was starting to tell my mom we should leave, and soon enough, my mom started to agree with me. We started to write on a napkin saying that we were going to leave the restaurant because of their poor service. While we were writing the note, our food came. My mom had a strict talk with our waitress to talk to the manager to speed up the service. When we came up to pay, I discovered it was the manager's first day at Steak and Shake. Then we left and we went to my mom's rehearsal and we were fifteen minutes late! If you go to Steak and Shake, you may have to pay the price for waiting...
Read moreA Five-Star First Visit: Steak ’n Shake Drive-Thru Delight!
I recently had my very first dining experience at the Steak ’n Shake drive-thru, and I must say—it was nothing short of exceptional. From start to finish, everything about the visit was smooth, satisfying, and surprisingly memorable for a fast-food experience.
First off, the service was impressively efficient and courteous. The staff member who took my order was patient, clear, and genuinely friendly—a refreshing touch that instantly elevated the experience. My order was taken accurately, prepared promptly, and delivered with a smile.
Now, the food—absolutely delicious! I ordered one of their signature steakburgers, and it was everything I hoped for: juicy, flavorful, and perfectly grilled, nestled in a soft, fresh bun. The seasoning was spot-on, and you could really taste the quality of the ingredients. The fries were crispy, golden, and not overly greasy—just the right balance. And of course, I couldn’t leave without trying one of their iconic milkshakes. I went with the classic chocolate, and it was rich, creamy, and indulgently thick—exactly what a real milkshake should be.
For a first visit, this experience checked all the boxes: great food, friendly service, and unbeatable value. It’s rare to find a drive-thru that delivers both speed and quality without compromise, but Steak ’n Shake exceeded my expectations on all fronts.
I’ll definitely be returning, and next time, I might even explore more of their menu. If you haven’t tried Steak ’n Shake yet, especially their drive-thru, you’re missing out on a hidden gem in the fast-food world. Highly recommended!
