4.5 rounded up to 5. Walked in and ordered to go. Fairly short wait time, under 10 min.
If you don't want to read this whole thing, just know this place has absolutely delicious, authentic food. They are a brand new spot. I will be back.
More detail: Perfectly seasoned, I mean perfectly! Juicy carne asada, amazing frijoles, and rice just like my mom makes with a little bit of peas and corn. Fantastic fresh self serve salsa bar with everything. The tortillas are just out of control, I wonder if they make them in house because I've never seen or tasted these from a store or any other Mexican spot.
Some observations: Pricing strategy is interesting and I'll be curious to see if/how that evolves. Right now they charge the same price for each offering no matter the filling. For example, all burritos are 9.50, which means you pay a premium price for a relatively small bean burrito. Typically bean only offerings are decoupled from meat prices for two different price points. You also typically see some variance for the different meat options. Not a complaint, but I feel like people might want to know this.
The bean and rice side, although delicious, was small, in my opinion. I feel like double the existing portion would be more appropriate. Keep in mind I ordered to go so maybe the portion is greater if you stay and eat?
I can't wait to go again and try more things! Great addition to the northwest side where we don't have a lot of great Mexican options. I have a feeling this place will have a lot of fans. Very good, high...
Read moreI had company visiting from Mexico and we drove by and they wanted to try this place. The resturant could be nice, but 4 of the booth tables were dirty. We had to wait for them to clean one off for us since the other 2 were in use. We ordered 1 chicken taco which was horrible. Chicken was dry and flavorless. Didn't get finished. We ordered one shrimp taco. It was just ok, but it was eaten. We ordered 4 Carne asada tacos which were again just ok but we ate them. 2 people had Carne asada burritos and they said they were "asi asi", meaning so so. One person did order a caramelo and she said it was good.
The 3 things that would make me never go back were: 1. After we spent $100, before tip, for a pretty meager amount of food for 4 people when we asked for some peppers they charged us. It wasn't a lot, but seems like those should be included on the salsa bar, especially when it's customary to get them in Mexico for these types of dishes. Peppers are cheap... just give them to people. 2. We ordered a side of beans and they charged us for rice and beans. When we advised them we didn't want the rice they acted like it would end their lives to fix it, so we just paid the extra $ and threw the rice away. 3. The quality of the food was way below any food truck on the south side of Tucson. I'm not kidding, I've had better tacos at about 20 different foods trucks around the city and it costs a whole hell...
Read moreUpdated review: I hate to amend my review and give just 2 stars, but for the last 2 years the quality has really gone downhill on the carne asada. I gave it several more tries but I give up. The meat is often overcooked and dry like beef jerky or it just tastes like really poor quality, old tasting and greasy plus gristly. Like they cook large batches several hours before and serve it to you reheated or kept it hot, hence why it’s dry and overcooked. I haven’t been able to get a fresh batch of it, no matter what time I go. Other items on the menu are still good, like the Birria. But their specialty, the carne asada, I can no longer recommend. If you are ever in Phoenix, try Taco Boys for really good quality carne asada. Maybe the management of this place should go try Taco Boys too and learn a few tips from them.
Old review: Best carne asado tacos in Tucson (that I know of) and certainly the ONLY good ones on the NW side of town. Authentic Sonoran carne asada. Great salsa bar. Clean, good service. Beans are great. Cabbage and grilled onions. FINALLY, true good quality fire grilled carne asada without having to go to México or...
