I go here all the time with my mom and sometimes friends and such.
A few tips to assist with the experience though-
GO WITH A NICE GROUP
The dining experience works best for groups who are willing to share their food. That way you can pick whatever you may be curious about trying, without being stuck eating something you're not crazy about.
The larger your party, the more difficult it can sometimes be to share your food across the table, although you have the added benefit of more variety, sometimes getting 1-2 pieces from multiple rolls, rather than 6 pieces of the exact same dish.
All in all, I'd say this style of dining experience works best with a group of 2-4 who are on the same page about sharing food.
SIDE DISHES
Sushi Kola offers very versatile side dishes in my opinion, which are great to take full advantage of.
If the place is busy, it can sometimes take a while for wait staff to come back around to you. That said, I ALWAYS order their cucumber salad, and sometimes opt to grab a hibachi meal as well.
The cucumber salad does a great job of cleansing the pallet after a spicy dish, without being overly filling. It's also perfect to nibble on between courses.
A hibachi meal works best when it can be shared amongst 2 or more people, as sometimes you can be stuck between courses for a few minutes. By sharing it, everyone can have something to tide them over without making that the main course. (Because let's be honest, the main event should be the sushi)
Crab rangoon also works as a great way to end your meal. They tend to come pretty quickly and come four at a time. So if you're not hungry enough for a full roll, but still want a little somethin somethin, these are a great choice.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LUNCH
Lunch takes place at Sushi Kola from open to 3PM. While dinner doesn't start until 5PM. Their lunch is $15 for all you can eat, while the dinner is $25 for all you can eat.
If you're local to the area and are looking for a place to frequent, the lunch is the way to go. They don't offer as much variety for their sushi rolls, but the Volcano roll, Dragon roll, and Spicy Girl offer very similar experiences to what other items you see during their dinner. And even during dinner, I will frequently grab these items as they're some of my favorite (especially the volcano!!)
They close from 3-5PM to prepare for dinner though, so make sure not to get stuck in that window if you do want to make plans of eating here.
MY TOP PICKS
As I mentioned earlier, but for anyone who just wanted the quick summary, this is my optimal lineup for lunch.
*Cucumber Salad, Dragon Roll, Spicy Girl, and Volcano Roll. *
+hibachi meal if the place is busy (or just order a bit more heavily - be careful not to go overboard, though)
For dinner, I also enjoy the Spider roll, Fredericksburg roll, and richmond roll.
I've tried every roll on the menu, and they're all great in their own ways. These are just my top picks.
DO KEEP IN MIND This restaurant is all you can eat, BUT you will be charged if you have "significant" leftovers. While I don't know ANYONE personally who has had this happen to them, I have read some of the other reviews where people claim to've had this happen. Order within reason though, and I'm sure you'll have no issue.
All in all though, this is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. It's a great value and makes for a very pleasant...
Read moreI don’t know why I ever try sushi from anywhere but Umi’s in Fredericksburg, it’s by far the best I have ever had and never disappointed. After hearing all the rave about Oishi Sushi King-Fredericksburg I had been dying to try it. So after our 6 month appointment Kinsley and I went. I ordered a Philadelphia Roll that had the absolute worst salmon I’ve ever had in it. Smelled and tasted fishy, and the pieces were so fatty that I literally had to spit parts of it out, but I pushed through and ate it. Following I ordered a California roll and an Avocado roll, figured how can you mess those up? They both came out burning up hot! The avocado was on the verge of turning bad. Needless to say I asked for the check. At this point I was worried about getting food poisoning and I was not about to eat hot rotten sushi. I was then told my server that she was unable to bring me the check until I finished eating. I told her about the problems I had experienced and told her I was finished. She informed me that she would not be bringing the check until I cleaned my plate and started to walk away. I quickly asked to speak the manager in which she responded “why? I already told you our policy. No check until you clean your plate” I responded “The manager. Now.” The manager happy as can be came over and I explained about my dining experience. She touched the sushi and said “just how we like it, hot as can be” I told her that I disliked it and have only experienced it being cold and that I would like the check. After more discussion and being told I’d be charged extra for not cleaning my plate the check was brought with 10% taken off. Needless to say I will NEVER be going back. Worst sushi of my life. I mean the frozen sushi from aldi is made with better ingredients. Umi here I come, you have a...
Read moreCurrently sitting inside waiting for our waiter to check on us. She rushed us as we sat down and acted impatient waiting for our order. Didn't get her name as she didn't care to give it. Another server had to run our food.
Waited even longer for Wasabi. Which you'd think at a sushi restaurant, it would be a given. "Made fresh" must mean prepped every day not actually made fresh like you'd think at a traditional Japanese restuarant. Our rolls tasted like nothing. Spicy tuna and spicy shrimp roll tasted flavorless. The shrimp tempura roll was already precooked and wasn't warm being brought to the table. We only got our one order in, finally got wasabi, and our server hasn't checked in again.
They use tablets for ringing in food, which would take two seconds if she even just stopped by. This place is not even worth the 15.99 let alone the price for dinner. Regrets, never again.
The best thing here is the water.
Off of their website:
Hostess The restaurant hostess is the first employee to interact with arriving guest as they enter the restaurant. It is the job of the hostess to greet arriving guest, welcome them into the establishment and seat them. The guest receives their first impression of the service of the restaurant by their exchange with the hostess.
We weren't greeted. The gentleman at the host stand cared more about his phone than getting us seated. Our first impression was definitely an impression.
Server Serves patrons by providing information to help food and beverage, selections, presenting ordered choices, maintaining dining ambiance.
We aren't impatient people. We understand if servers get weeded. This place wasn't busy and yet we were rushed then ignored.
I'm not gonna lie, I don't see the hype or why this place is rated highly. It's a joke of a...
