I always love to eat at The Taj Indian Cuisine in Fredericksburg. Even though they have come under new ownership, the food continues to be delicious. The chef is from India, from a family of restauranteurs. His experience shows. The food is made to order, to your specific taste. Many people do not try Indian food because they fear it will be too spicy for their palate. The food servers at Taj always ask how you wish your food to be cooked, and cook it to your taste. Good food does take time, but even though it is made to order, it does not take too long to get my food.
The atmosphere is lovely, with soft, peppy Indian music playing in the background, though sometimes I have heard cafe jazz playing the background, which was very nice, too.
The waitstaff is lovely and very attentive. I am always greetly warmly and the waitstaff pays much attention to me. Compared to many other places, I am treated like royalty.
My favorite is the Chicken Tikka Masala, but I like the other dishes as well, especially the Butter Chicken and when they have it, the Vegetable soup is a real winner. I am afraid that I got spoiled before Covid with the lunch buffet, which is no longer available; however, if you ask, they can make you a plate of "small dishes" of either a vegetarian meal, a chicken meal or a mixed meat platter. You will have to speak to the waiter to get this special meal at lunch and inquire about the cost.
The naan there is impeccable. It is soft, light, buttery and fragrant. Eating it feels so nourishing. Some naan gets tough and rubbery as soon as it loses its heat from the oven, but this delicious bread remains light and fluffy and appealing through out the duration of the meal.
I never have concerns about Covid when I go in as the restaurant is always spotless and clean, and social distancing is not a problem.
If you do not have time to eat inside, you can order your meal to go.
It is a lovely place, and is a wonderful place to take a date, bring a friend, bring a group or dine alone.
Whenever you come, you will feel welcomed, special and leave very well fed. Please give this wonderful restaurant...
Read moreAfter a long and grueling 11-hour drive from SC (what should’ve been 7 hours stretched thanks to heavy rain and thunderstorms), we decided to take a much-needed break. Being strict vegans, we looked for a place we hoped would have at least a few options for us—and Taj India restaurants caught our eye.
From the moment we walked in, the kindness of the staff genuinely took us by surprise. The servers were so warm, polite, and accommodating that it reminded us there truly are kind people in the world. Though the restaurant didn’t have a large vegan menu, the staff went above and beyond to craft a dish just for us. We thought we’d ordered just one, but to our delight—and mild surprise—when the food arrived, it came beautifully plated and generously portioned.
Let me tell you: the taste did not disappoint. The food was so delicious that if we lived nearby, I’m certain we’d be eating there every day.
And the kindness didn’t stop there. They offered us a complimentary drink that my daughter absolutely loved. As we were preparing to leave, the server handed my daughter the very glass her drink had come in—to keep. She was overjoyed, and I insisted she keep it as a memory of this unexpected but beautiful moment of hospitality.
For the rest of our drive, we couldn’t stop talking about how wonderful this experience was. Thank you, Taj for welcoming us so warmly, for your incredible food, and for reminding us of the goodness in people.

Read moreThis was the first time we visiting this place (dine in). The menu options ordered were all good portions, so I suggest be conscious when ordering, most likely you will need to take with you some left overs, for some options. We tried the Lamb Chop Shahi, Butter Chicken, Kofta-A-Sahib-Anjeeri and the Lamb Rogan Josh. We liked that they offer levels of spiciness to choose from that pelase each member of a family. If you order Naan, well, it is a must right in an Indian cuisine, make sure they bring what you ordered. We asked for and were charged for the Black truffle naan, but got just plain. The Garlic naan was good though, I recommend this one. The reason why I do not give them a 5 star is because upon receiving the check, there were a few price differences of what was charged for some plates vs the prices on the printed menu given at the restaurant. If they may have provided an outdated menu and perhaps was not reflecting maybe new menu prices is unacceptable. For example, the Lam Chop Shahi, on the printed menu was $23, but when the check (digital) came (after payment was made), it was actually charged $25, the Lamb Rogan was priced at $20 vs after it was $22, same with the Butter chicken $1 difference. So, not sure if this was an isolated case, but hey, if you visit be on the look out. The person who came at the table to get the payment was not the same waiter at the beginning, who for some reason kept on insisting on us writing a review(s), wonder why! asking for multiple...
