When you visit French Lick, Indiana, make sure you stop by the German Café 🇩🇪 It’s such a cute building and the decor transports you to Deutschland for an authentic German meal 😋 The servers are so friendly and are dressed in Dirndls to complete the experience. They offer traditional German dishes like bratwuerste, goulasch, schnitzel and more. And save room for homemade desserts that rotate regularly 🍰 Learn more about French Lick West Baden on our podcast WeTravelThere.com/frenchlick 🎙️ #myfrenchlick #frenchlick #westbaden #indiana #frenchlickwestbaden #roadtrip #familytrip #summertime #foodie #instagood #foodinspo #yum #yummyfood #fyp

READ BEFORE YOU GO!!! Cannot recommend. Not REAL German food (despite owner’s response to another reviewer who said the same). I've had German food both homemade and in restaurants and this isn’t it. This was something like a Johnsonville sausage and McD's hashbrowns. I don’t think there is anything homemade. All frozen, pre-made, reheated (barely). The sausage wasn't even warmed through (so it’s probably best it wasn’t fresh / homemade bc it would’ve been raw / unsafe). The potato pancakes (also called potato patties on the menu) were greasy, no real flavor and I believe frozen.. which why? How hard is it to shred potatoes? Especially if everything else is frozen. Most importantly, the food doesn’t resemble the pics provided AT ALL! I asked our server (very apologetic) bc it looked like real sausages on the menu board outside. She advised they have changed vendors and she hasn’t tried the new sausages. It’s like ordering sausage and getting brown and serve… ok if that’s what you’re expecting, but not if it’s mis-represented (see the pics I attached). In short, food is basically the fast food version of German cuisine. Sausages are not even close to authentic & all our food was cold… like warm on the outside and actually cold inside), server was pleasant and said she would pass my sentiments on, but no one ever came out to address the issues. We didn’t finish our food and didn’t take it to go. Side note: I really don’t like that much fabric in a dining establishment. It smells like a fryer in there and I don’t see how they can possibly keep the place sanitary with that much fabric and knick knacks to dust. They must be surviving on the basis of so many tourists bc I can’t imagine much repeat business from locals. Maybe it used to be better. We visited on Friday 9/6 about noon-1pm

We stopped here 2 days in a row and I wanted to give them a 5 so bad. Honestly, great restaurant in a small town. Service is a little slow, but definitely kind. Photo of giant pretzel included (hands for reference- indeed large). The cheese was amazing, but the pretzel had some pretty crusty parts from being reheated. We got the sample platter, too and that was 5 stars. We did notice that the pretzel was acquiring some of the blue from the plate and after eating it, we checked the bottom of the plate and it specifically says “Do Not Use with Food” in addition to the don’t dishwash or microwave normal yadayada. We let the server know and she just said “we don’t microwave on it” and she did let us know that she told someone about it, but it felt like I would have felt better if they just offered to get rid of the plate that specifically says don’t serve food on it. But also, I’m not the state of California, and I figure I’m probably not gonna die from it, so the family decided on a 4 ⭐️

If I could give a 0, I would definitely do it. Left there in tears just about. First the service was very slow. People in front of me left because there were tables that needed cleaned and it appeared to be short staff as well as no one coming up to let us know anything. It appeared very strange. But given that we heard it was the place to eat we decided to wait it out. Very bad decision. Beer cheese was cold but I ate anyway. One waitress, not ours was very sweet and asked to warm it up.She said it was supposed to be warm. But I said it's ok. Our waitress told me the beer cheese was served cold. Which I found very unusual. But said ok. What got me was my fried potatoes with onions were forgotten about. She brought them out later with no onions visible or tasted. I seen pics of these potatoes on web and they looked totally different. Huge visible onions. The waitress never came back to our table to check on us, so when I went up to bar to ask about the potatoes the chef rudely said they always have onions on them. She was EXTREMELY RUDE. She and waitress argued with me and waitress picked thru potatoes with fingers ,at our table and said there's a piece of onion. OMG I have NEVER EVER experiencd this.Obviously they have never heard The customer is ALWAYS RIGHT!! UNBELIEVABLE. Needless to say I and my family will never be back or recommend this restraunt. I never leave reviews or ever refuse to pay for food but I had to take the time out of our vacation and write this asap. I expect the owner to reach out to me please about this, as I hope no one else has to spend the last day of their vacation like this. I also got 2 deserts and spent 60.00 for 2 people...

A strange and unpleasant experience. There were two tables of guests seated when we arrived. The server, who told us right away that she was the only one working (that was the first red flag), placed us at a table in a side room. The room was absolutely freezing, and we were close to shivering the entire time. The room was dark and it felt like we were to enjoy the meal in a dark, cold cave.

We ordered the sampler platter for 3, and were disappointed by the amount of food. It sounded like it would be quite the feast, but we easily finished without getting very full. The plates all looked like they came from Goodwill, they were all mismatched and in poor quality. The food was pretty good but not exceptional, and it quickly became increasingly unappetizing as it got cold which happened within about 5 minutes. It was also quite overpriced for the quantity and quality. The decorations are beyond dated and there was very odd, distracting music on loop.

The atmosphere was a 1 out of 10 at best at the time I visited, the service wasn’t great (more of the owner’s fault rather than server as they appeared to have no support), and the food was no better than I could cook at home for 1/5 of the price where we could also have a pleasant, warm environment. We will not be back, and I’m quite disappointed because we drove here for a birthday celebration - they said that this was the coldest meal they ever experienced at a restaurant in their 70+ years. I wish we had left immediately once we noticed so...
