Moo Moo's Steakhouse - A Hidden Gem in French Lick, Indiana
Located just across the street from the French Lick Hotel in Indiana, Moo Moo's Steakhouse is a high-end, fancy restaurant that provides the perfect setting for a date night or anniversary celebration The atmosphere combines the elegance of a reservation-only fine dining experience with the comfort of a gentleman's steakhouse.
One of the standout aspects of Moo Moo's is the amazing food. Despite having a simple menu, it is well-rounded, offering a variety of options, including steaks, seafood, and even a burger. During my visit, I ordered the "putter," a bone-in spiral ribeye, and decided to top it with the optional extra scallops. Served medium rare, the steak was cooked to absolute perfection. The sear on the crust was crunchy and seasoned with garlic, while the meat itself was a beautiful pink medium rare throughout. It's worth noting that this level of precision is not easy to achieve with such a rare cut of beef. Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the beef was 100% PRIME grade, indicating the exceptional quality of the meat. Such high-quality offerings are unexpected in a location far from a major city center.
The attention to detail extends beyond the steak. The garden salad I had was perfectly arranged with a delightful mix of greens and Roma tomatoes. Served just below room temperature, it was crisp and delicious, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients and skilled preparation.
The wine collection at Moo Moo's deserves special mention. It was evident that each wine was carefully hand-picked by the owner's wife, who took great pride in her selections. The wines offered the most perfect pairing, enhancing the overall dining experience.
To my pleasant surprise, the head chef, Brian, took the time to come out and greet us personally. His charming smile and humble persona immediately won us over. It was clear that he had a military background, likely from his stance. Brian's service in the US Navy has undoubtedly influenced his approach to culinary excellence at Moo Moo's. As a fellow veteran, I felt a sense of connection and trust, knowing that Brian was in charge of the grill. I am confident in his abilities and will gladly return to enjoy his culinary creations.
The bar at Moo Moo's is impressively well-stocked, and the bartender, Amanda, takes pride in her craft. She has personally curated the mixed drinks, including a knockout old fashioned with smoked oak and all. The level of care and expertise in crafting these beverages adds to the overall dining experience.
Service at Moo Moo's is exceptional. Our waitress was kind, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu, providing us with all the necessary information. It was refreshing to receive such dedicated and personalized service throughout our meal.
Before we left, the owner himself took the time to visit our table and share the history behind Moo Moo's. His family has Hawaiian and Korean roots, and his challenging childhood has led him to achieve great success. Now owning and operating three of his own restaurants, he is a true embodiment of the American dream. As an Indiana University alumnus, he has created a hidden gem of a steakhouse in southern Indiana.
In conclusion, I highly recommend Moo Moo's Steakhouse as a must-dine establishment. The exceptional food, impeccable service, and attention to detail make it a standout dining experience. The owner's personal story and commitment to quality set this restaurant apart. Moo Moo's is a hidden gem that should not be missed, and I wouldn't be surprised if Gordon Ramsey himself came to...
Read moreFood: Calamari was tough with too much batter and the batter was something you'd get at a sports bar. Caesar salad was overdressed, no chunks of parmesan or anchovy like you'd expect at a high end steakhouse. My bone-in ribeye was rare, not the medium rare I ordered and about equal parts steak and butter, but very good despite that.
Service: The place was practically empty except for one large party and my wife and I. It took the server 30 minutes after we placed our order for her to tell us that they were out of the ribeye and then another 20 minutes to get our food. And they forgot my wife's side of au gratin potatoes twice, and we never got it. I'll cut her a little slack because she did have a big table besides ours but still for this kind of money that service is unacceptable.
Atmosphere: Air conditioning was extremely loud and as soon as you get used to it it cuts out leaving the restaurant eerily quiet. There was an off putting odor to the place too. Stale fried seafood or something. The whole building smelled like that (we stayed in an Airbnb upstairs), not sure if it was from moo moo's kitchen or the building itself but either way it stunk.
Conclusion: We knew this place was overpriced before we ever stepped inside. It's pricier than the high-end steakhouses in the city that we frequent. Fair enough, it's in the middle of nowhere at a resort and you can expect to pay a premium. But to be so overpriced and fall well short in every other respect was disappointing. I can't recommend it and we would...
Read moreI will start by saying that my pork chops was phenomenal! My wife got one of the chicken dishes and it was ok. The flavor combinations on her plate were a bit odd but it was nothing that would prevent us from eating here again. The atmosphere is very relaxed and upscale. Our waitress was punctual and we did not have to wait for refills. There was another waitress who repeatedly cut customers off while walking back to the kitchen. She was walking so fast and did not say anything until after she was up on the person. I found it odd and as we ate I noticed that this happened at least twice during dinner and once while we were on our way out. This is obviously a minor thing overall, but it did distract me and caught my attention. My only criticism is their menu. It is very limited. That seems to be the trend recently. On top of that, there is another online menu that is not the correct/updated menu but claims to be Moos Moos in French Lick. This threw us off upon arrival and while I don't know what the issue or reason behind this is, the menus that were handed to us at dinner were very limited compared to the ones that showed online. Hopefully this gets fixed in the future, but I felt it warranted mentioning for those that like to look up menus before arriving. I would still recommend Moos Moos. There is no dress code and a reservation is recommended but was not hard...
