I gave this review some thought for 2 days. Let me paint the scene- Friday night at 830pm my wife and I come in for dinner. We are seated on the left side of the restaurant at a booth. There are 6 (people at one table top and 3 couples (including us) for grand total of 4 tables. After being seated, 15 minutes go by, all while staff is walking by our table multiple times and vaguely interacting with the other tables and what seemed intentionally ignoring ours. After 15 minutes of noone wanting to take our drink order, I flagged down a waitress (red polo shirt/white pants/blonde hair) The best way I can describe her body language is she showed disdain that we were ready to order and flagged her down. We even questioned if I had been rude? ( I wasn't) just a simple - sorry miss, we are ready to order, could we place that order with you?) I don't blame her for this, of 5-6 staff I saw EVERY single one intentionally walked by with their eyes to the ground so as not to make contact with tables. Being a Friday night I would think their top staff would be on shift. That was not the case, at no point were we approached after dinner came out to verify we were set or needed anything else (regular server behavior).
I picked this place based on the food reviews - those were misleading as well.
The meatloaf is average at best. The burger was good (its hard to screw up a burger) The dumpling soup went untouched after the 1st taste.
At the end of our stay, we walked to the hostess podium and asked for our check, a business card or email address (to send this very same experience directly to management) We were told - you can find it on Facebook (with a again rude tone and annoyance by the same waitress)
We are owners of some different businesses, one of them being a humble cafe in Texas and try to visit iconic small restaurants in our trips around the nation. I have over 25 years in the service and sales industries, and expect some basic things when we visit non chain establishments. I believe that the restaurant has potential and could use some basic training of the staff front and back of the house and things will turn around. We will be back next year again and will give it a 2nd try. Hope to be able to leave a 5 star...
Read moreWent in as a celebration of remembrance for our grandmother, we picked this place based solely on it being something she would try. The experience was less than memorable. All of the food was incredibly bland, I had the avocado ranch burger, burger was dry and overcooked, all the vegetables were tasteless, avocado was simply mush. The beef was nearly tasteless and I suspect not seasoned as well. My wife had the shrimp scampi, was served in penne pasta that was rubbery as well as the shrimp being overcooked and bland. No salt and pepper or butter or olive oil was used. Salad was generic as well but crisp so that's a plus. My son got the 6oz Angus sirloin, was the only thing cooked and seasoned well. Ordered medium rare and came out much closer to rare but still decent flavor and acceptable. My daughter had chicken tenders that were mostly frozen over breaded chicken nuggets. We got 2 appetizers to start, the artichoke dip and the Mozzarella sticks. Mozzarella sticks seem to have been battered in a sweeter batter similar to a waffle cone flavor. Marinara was bland and generic also. The artichoke dip was mediocre at best and came out piping hot (microwave suspected) the crostini bread that was served with it was fantastic however and easily the best part of the meal. The dip was also served with yellow Tortilla round chips, an odd pairing and not very good with the dip. I only tried one chip and went immediately back to the bread. Paid 88.50 for this food and was less than satisfied. Saw another review that described it as on par with cracker barrel food but more bland and more expensive. I agree completely with that comparison. Cracker barrel is a much better value in my opinion as well. Service was decent and very quick, so we tipped 20 dollars to the waitress. We definitely recommend opting to try a different place in lieu of...
Read moreVisited The Main Street Mill because it was lunch time and we avoid fast food. We don't live in the area and didn't research Front Royal for the best food places. My wife and I were both pleasantly surprised on entering the restaurant. We remained on the lower level and did not visit the upper floor. The ambience (on the lower level) was appealing and old-worldly with the heavy aged wood beams and uprights, and murals including that of a morose bull and inquisitive looking horse's face. The service, by what seemed to be at the time an all female staff, was prompt and courteous. I ordered the Cajun Chicken Salad and my wife got the Chicken (not fried) Ceasar. Our waitress was dressed as a milkmaid and she was extremely welcoming. We were surprised at how inexpensive the dishes were on the menu but were exceedingly delighted with their presentations and taste. I expected 'rubber' chicken but the seasoning was perfect and in both cases the chicken was moist and delicious. My reason for visiting the area was to see the fall colors on Skyline Drive and I was afforded a fine preview of it on my plate. There were quite a few dishes on the menu I would have liked to try. The crab and corn soup was very tempting but reluctantly I wasn't inclined to over eat. Both my wife and I agree that The Main Street Mill was more than a worthy place and deserving of a return visit. We congratulate the chef and service staff. We consider our visit as excellent value for money. One minor negative issue was that the toilet seat in the male bathroom could...
