Dan Sushi in Fuquay-Varina located on 401 is in a small plaza with a few other shops. Blink and you might miss it. All parking is out front and shared with the other shops in the plaza.
I have mixed feelings about Dan Sushi. From the outside, you might be a little turned off from eating there. Initially stepping in you might feel the same way, sitting down at the tables might even make you think about the restaurants you passed on the way over. Visually the restaurant is lacking. The napkin holders are the plastic packaging that the napkins came in, not a dispenser, the plates are styrofoam plates. The soy chips are disposable plastic cups. You feel like you are eating from a sushi food truck.
There is a corner wall in the restaurant that has pictures of sushi that are like 4x6 pictures framed that only someone standing in front of can see. It's strange. Meanwhile there is a massive 75" or bigger tv behind the bar that feels out of place.
The service overall was fine. Nothing stood out as being anything out of the norm good it bad. Our waitress was friendly for the most part but also didn't waste any time rushing off. We were the only people sitting in the restaurant. During our visit there were about 10 people that came and picked up food.
The food overall was fine. For a small place, we both agreed that we would come back. The selection isn't as large as some other places, and there are a few interesting looking rolls that we will try in the future. The spicy yellowtail was good and we liked it with the crunches, the Philly roll was ok, and the volcano roll definitely was a good option.
We also opted for some fried rice to eat for lunch the next day and I will say this, for the amount that you get, is worth it. It easily made for 2 meals for $10.
We will go back again, but really hope that they look to improve the...
Read moreI love trying out new sushi places, so when I spotted this new one I stopped in right away for an early dinner. We were immediately greeted at the door and seated. The atmosphere is casual and there were charming Japanese decorations. The sushi chef even had on a cool chef coat. I am sometimes a bit wary of casual strip mall sushi restaurants, but I'm glad I tried this place out.
I ordered the eel avocado, spicy tuna, and spicy yellowtail. My boyfriend got the volcano roll, and spicy salmon. Since it was the opening week, they gave us each a spring roll while which I could tell was freshly cooked.
Our sushi came and it looked great. My boyfriend and I share so we liked that it came arranged on one large plate. Our sushi was fresh and tasted just like the fancier looking sushi places. The rolls were smaller sized, which I liked because I could comfortably fit them in my mouth, and you got more pieces to make up for the size. They were expertly wrapped and didn't fall apart.
My boyfriend's volcano roll was good. We are on the hunt for extra creamy cooked volcano rolls, which we've tried elsewhere, and the one here was a standard mix of spicy mayo and crab.
The price was good, and I look forward to coming again to try their lunch deals. This will be one of my standard sushi...
Read moreI have no idea why "Hibachi" is in the name of this place. We ordered three teriyaki plates, and there is no way the chicken was prepared on a hibachi (traditional Japanese barbecue that uses charcoal). The chicken we received tastes like it was boiled, and then flash-seared on a griddle to make it look like it was grilled. It was some of the blandest chicken I have ever tasted, despite being soaked in teriyaki sauce. The broccoli and and carrots were also boiled, not steamed. The consistency was like mash potatoes. Totally mushy. About the only thing that was decent with the whole plate was the rice. And what is with the dipping sauce? It was Thousand Island minus the relish. What is that even for? I don't think I'll be eating here again. I know there aren't a lot of choices for Asian food in Fuquay, but this was a pretty bad attempt at checken teriyaki. I've had better at the fast food teriyaki places like Yoshinoya. Maybe their sushi is better? After this experience I'm afraid to even try it. Raw fish isn't something I want to take a chance on whether it's fresh or...
