My boyfriend and I just ate at this restaurant. I ordered a combination of sides and he got a burrito. The food was very bland and my boyfriend took "one bite" and mentioned to the waiter that he did not like it. I was also supposed to get lettuce and tomatoes and I never received those but didn't want to make a big deal out of it. The waiter said he would take the burrito off and asked if he wanted something else, he said no and I finished a portion of my meal.
We headed over to the register to pay and noticed that the burrito was still on the receipt. I'm assuming that the guy at the register was the manager. We explained to him that he took one bite of the burrito and that we decided not to get anything else instead and just wanted to pay for mine and the chips that we shared. He said "ok I take it off" then proceeds to take off $3. We're about to pay but notice the total is still significant, so we said "I'm sorry I thought you were going to take it off".
He proceeds to say "you eat half you pay half. Either you pay or he pay half" ( pointing to our waiter). I said I don't think he should have to pay for it but ok we'll pay.
My boyfriend repeats the same concept stating we don't feel the waiter should have to pay for it and as we're about to hand him the money to pay .. HE SLAMS HIS HANDS ON THE COUNTER and says " I take it off but you people don't ever come back here! You people look like you want free food"!
So now I'm infuriated! The fact that we are black does not mean we want free food. You said you would take it off, then proceeded to make the server pay for it, and then got upset because we we're about to pay but wanted to express that it wasn't fair to make the waiter pay for our food.
I never write reviews because I like to give people grace. I'm always thinking maybe this was a one time occurrence and they were just having a bad day. I really try to think the best about people. But this was very disrespectful and unacceptable. I would've been ok with him saying that they don't currently have a policy where they take items off of checks instead of making the server pay for half of our food. The free food commment however was the deal breaker. We're very...
Read moreWhen trying a new Mexican restaurant my husband and I always order the mixed fajitas so that we can compare. One order is usually more than enough to share. At one of our favorite local places we pay $13 for enough mixed fajitas to eat in the restaurant and some to take home. The fajitas at El Torero were by far the most expensive that we've had with the least amount of food. At a menu price of nearly $18 we got a full plate of beans and rice (black beans are not available in the restaurant BTW) and a plate (not sizzling skillet) of grilled meat, peppers and onions with lettuce, sour cream, pico de gallo and (not homemade) guacamole squished on the side. We've never had to dig under our fajita mix to find the sour cream. With such a high price we felt disappointed that we weren't even given a full plate of fajita mix. On top of that, we found out that at El Torero an order of flour tortillas comes with only two tortillas instead of the normal three. They really seem to be cutting a lot of corners (tortillas, beans, guac). I am really surprised that this restaurant has received such good ratings. We will not...
Read moreIt's a run of the mill "American" Mexican restaurant. I don't know if it's a chain, but the food tastes like one.
The staff were pleasant and attentive so I can't complain about service.
It doesn't change the taste of the food in the least, but the decor threw me off. The most obvious thing when entering is a large blue marlin mounted on the back wall. You can catch them off the coast of eastern Mexico, but it didn't really make me think of a Mexican restaurant.
Based on the rest of the sport fish on the walls, it looks like they took over a seafood restaurant and didn't redecorate. I haven't been in the area for several years so I don't even remember what kind of restaurant it started out as.
Solid 3, if you are in the area. Prices aren't bad (especially for alcohol).
There is handicapped access from parking to tables and restrooms. High chairs are easily available.
Six o'clock Friday evening was busy, but it wasn't loud, you can seat yourself, and it took about 15 minutes for a party of seven to get drinks, order and be served.
The food was not to my personal taste, but the rest of my...
